One more thing - we now officially know whose name will pin the needle on the ‘Applause-O-Meter’ at next year’s Oscar telecast.

As a father of a 5yo boy, I think first of Paul as Doc from Pixar’s _Cars_ even though I have seen half a dozen of his movies. I guess a sequel probably won’t happen now that Newman, Carlin, Joe Ranft and (almost) Owen Wilson died.

Shame about Paul…

I used to joke (actually, I was serious!) that the two men on my “Actors Over 80 I’d Do In A Heartbeat” were Newman & Douglas (Kirk). Now that list is down to one - at least until Clint Eastwood has a few more birthdays.

For me, that scene in “The Long, Hot Summer” when he’s taunting Joanne Woodward from her balcony - he’s wearing only boxers and carrying a pillow. Jesus.

Not often does such class, grace and philanthropy come in such a blindingly beautiful package.

Joanne Woodward was the luckiest woman in Hollywood.

Also using eBay to auction any of his legacy would prevent people currently boycotting eBay to bid as well.

Expected, but so sad. My heart aches for Joanne. He was one of my favorite actors, on-screen and off.

I love that he and Joanne had a quickie Las Vegas wedding, but one that lasted 50 years.

I adore all the movies/performances that he usually gets kudos for, such as Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid, Cool Hand Luke, The Verdict, The Sting, and so on, but one of my favorite performances that doesn’t often get mentioned was in John Huston’s film [The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068853/). It’s quirky, fun, and it has [so many great lines](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068853/quotes) that Newman just tosses off perfectly.

> [@](#):

> Judge Roy Bean: He’d didn’t deserve a chance. If he wanted a chance; he should have gone somewhere else.

> [@](#):

> Judge Roy Bean: Ordinarily, I’d take you in my court and try you and hang you. But if you’ve got money for whiskey, I guess we can dispense with those proceedings.

My favorite:

> [@](#):
>
> Judge Roy Bean: [Bean apologizes to the marshals’ wives] I understand you have taken exception to my calling you whores. I’m sorry. I apologize. I ask you to note that I did not call you callous-ass strumpets, fornicatresses, or low-born gutter sluts. But I did say “whores.” No escaping that. And for that slip of the tongue, I apologize.

Bean’s obsession with Lily Langtry is at the heart of the film.

> [@](#):

> Tector Crites (Jackson gang): Yes it is, ma’am. They was wild men in those days.
> Lily Langtry: Who did it?
> Tector Crites (Jackson gang): Snake River Rufus Krile did that, I believe.
> Lily Langtry: What became of him?
> Tector Crites (Jackson gang): Judge shot him. Dead. Dead, dead. Then he fined him for some other crimes. And then later we hanged him.
> Lily Langtry: Most appropriate.

Goodbye, Paul.

I lived in Johnstown, PA, when he filmed _Slapshot_. Unfortunately, I never had the good luck to meet him, but watching the film brings back memories of my home town.

I will be wearing my Charlestown Chiefs jersey with the #7 on the back and sleeves in his memory today.

The man was a class act, both on and off the screen. His enduring marriage to Joanne Woodward is something we can all aspire too.

The world is a little emptier tonight. I hope he at least went peacefully.

A personal favorite of mine as well - I have it on DVD and every now and then I’ll dust it off for another view.

But oddly enough the film that came to mind when I was mulling over this news, was a lower-quality Western he did called **Hombre**. Something about his performance as the only decent human being amongst a nest of losers and racist trash always fascinated me. It’s not a great film and not his best job by far ( though he never did a lousy one I can think of, even in the weakest of movies ). But that’s the image of Newman that is emblazoned on my mind whenever I think about him.

A great, great loss to the rest of us. But an even greater life lived for himself.

Sure, I’m going to miss him most immediately for his late-career acting (I loved his work in **Nobody’s Fool** , and he was also good in **Empire Falls** ), but he was a pioneer in entrepreneurial, self-supporting philanthropy (whose camps cheered up many juvenile cancer patients) and he was married to Joanne Woodward for seemingly forever.
>
> One lasting regret: no recent re-teaming with Robert Redford.
>
> On edit: keep a close eye on TCM this week. Aside from the retrospective career montage, they may well scratch their scheduled programming for an impromptu Paul Newman marathon or series. They’ve done it before to honor other film icons. For sure, if it doesn’t happen this week, it’ll be the next.

\*\*Torn Curtain \*\*was on last night (not sure which channel I was watching).

I remember most the opening scene in \*\*Cool Hand Luke \*\*with him beheading the parking meters. Then the eating of 54 hardboiled eggs in the prison camp. And the finale when he echoed the famous Strother Martin line, “What we got here is..failure to communicate.”

Other roles come to mind in \*\*Exodus, The Sting, The Verdict \*\*(filmed largely in the Mass. Statehouse on Beacon Hill, Boston, across from which I used to live), \*\*The Hudsucker Proxy \*\*(filmed where I used to live), and then there was Irwin Allen’s rehash of all his disaster movies, alas, **When Time Ran Out…**

He had some great quotes:

“The embarrassing thing is that the sald dressing is outgrossing my films.”

“People stay married because they want to, not because the doors are locked.”

"I picture my epitaph: “Here lies Paul Newman, who died a failure because his eyes turned brown.”

“I’m a supporter of gay rights. And not a closet supporter either. From the time I was a kid, I have never been able to understand attacks upon the gay community.”

Paul Newman is my 75 year old mother’s favorite actor by far.

My three favorite Newman films:

1. \*\* Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid \*\*(I thought nobody could possibly be cooler than Newman after seeing this film at age 11 – except maybe Robert Redford.)

2. \*\*Cool Hand Luke \*\*(My favorite line: “Sometimes nothing can be a real cool hand.”)

3. \*\*The Sting \*\*(The 4 nines vs 4 jacks scene on the train was priceless)
