Goofy names for arenas and stadiums

Oh, apparently CricKet is some sort of wireless company.

I haven’t seen it there either…Man, I miss seeing that facade on the approach to a game.

And to segue right onto the complaining-about-corporate-stadium-names bandwagon…

M & T Bank Stadium?? Makes me sort of miss PSI Net. At least that almost rolled off the tongue. And the glowing purple logo was sorta pretty.

I was delighted that the Cincinnati Reds new home was the non-commercial but somewhat pretentious sounding Great American Ballpark until I reailzed that it was name for the Great American Electric Company. (I think, though it may be water or some other utility).

You’re actually nostalgic about a disappeared corporate name on a ballpark? Well, OK.

My nominee: Manchester United’s home, Old Trafford. What’s a trafford and why don’t they just buy a new one?

Yes, it is a bit odd to be nostalgic over the passing of “Pacific Bell” from the Giants’ stadium. But, PacBell did contribute a lot of money to the building of the stadium, which was built entirely with private money. Constrast that to the hated 3Com, which had nothing to do with Candlestick Park, and little to do with San Francisco itself, being based in South Bay/Silicon Valley. PacBell was a local company, with years of history in the city of San Francisco. SBC on the other hand is based out of Texas. Don’t underestimate the political angle too, Texas is a state which is as “red” as the Bay Area is “blue”.

You know, I’m watching the Duke/UConn game right now and it comes to mind that the AlamoDome is a goofy name.

A sports arena named after a church that is well known for a bloody massacre where men, women and children were butchered…great idea!!

But at least the Alamodome isn’t named after Alamo Rent a Car.
