From what I am reading, the new version of Chrome will not allow users to block autoplay of videos. For example, when I go to Fox News or CNN, I just want to read the articles. I do not want to watch a video unless I click on the video.

Apparently Google has decided that it knows better and will not allow me to turn the feature off. That is absolute horseshit. Is there a way to do it or is there a better browser that will allow me to browse the internet as I wish to do?

Could you give a cite?

For example it was just a few months ago:

> When Google released Chrome 66 in April, it clamped down on lots of websites that tried to play video and audio automatically. But the browser doesn’t always block autoplay, and on Thursday, Google detailed how Chrome learns which sites to squelch.
>
> Chrome begins with a list of more than a thousand sites where Google found that the browser’s users typically played audio or video with sound. Then, as you browse the web, Chrome updates that list as it learns where you play media and where you don’t.
>
> “As you teach Chrome, you may find that you need to click ‘play’ every now and then, but overall the new policy blocks about half of unwanted autoplays, so you will have fewer surprises and less unwanted noise when you first arrive at a website,” John Pallett, a Chrome product manager, said in a blog post.

Your cite is my cite. 🙂 I don’t want Google to pick which half of the sites it wants to play video automatically for me or to “learn” where I want media played. I want no media played on any site unless I click the play button. I understand that others may have a different opinion, but I would like either a setting to do what I want or a different browser that does it.

**UltraVires** , have you tried “Disable HTML5 Autoplay” extension for Chrome?

There’s also “Video Autoplay Blocker.”

I don’t have that one yet, so I can’t say how well it works.
