Google doesn’t allow wildcard searches in the way you’d need, so best you can do is google articles where someone has asked the same question.

I put in search terms “city name ending x” and found [this](http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_are_some_cities_that_end_with_the_letter_X).

I don’t think Google is the right tool for this. It’s not designed for the sort of wildcard searches you’d need for something like this (i.e., a search for “\*x”). Fortunately, Google did help find a few city name databases:

[ul]
[li][United Nations Code for Trade and Transport Locations](http://www.unece.org/cefact/locode/service/main.htm)[/li][li][MaxMind World Cities with Population](http://www.maxmind.com/app/worldcities)[/li][li][GeoDataSource World Cities Database Free Edition](http://www.geodatasource.com/cities-free.html) (login: [citynames@mailinator.com](mailto:citynames@mailinator.com) / password: endsinx)[/li][li][GeoNames.org database dump of cities with a population \> 1000](http://www.geonames.org/export/)[/li][/ul]

I went ahead and searched through the GeoNames database for you (the others were too big for Excel to handle). If you need to find a specific city from this list, let me know.

The city is located within Southern California's Inland Empire region, which is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area. Along with the rest of Jurupa Valley, Rubidoux has transformed from a rural area of quarries and dairy farms, in mid to late 20th century, to a suburb of the two...

That’s just weird. Where DID they go?!

I hate computers.

Edit: (Oh, neat. We seem to have found an UltraEdit bug…)

Except that many of those in that list are not cities. For example, I saw one name in there that is the name of a village in Switzerland that I know very well, which only has less than 2000 inhabitants.

ETA: I see that you used a database listing “cities” with population \> 1000. I would disagree that population \> 1000 = city. A city is where you can’t walk in downtown back alleys at 2 AM without being afraid of a mugging.

That’s just a matter of semantics. I already said it was a “[GeoNames.org](http://GeoNames.org) database dump of cities with a population \> 1000”. If you want only more densely populated cities, they have separate lists for that as well.

Well, if you want to go through that list and match it up with international violent crime statistics, by all means go ahead… =)

That’s an egghead way of doing it. What I will do is take the population\>50000 list from geonames, go to each location ending in X and walk around waving my wallet at 2 AM. I’ll report back in a few months.

Which excludes most places in Canada and Japan, at the very least…

Ooh, ooh. Nevermind the list. Start here in Arcata! We can finally become a city, and I can finally afford some booze!
