The Goon Show?
Heck, the fact the two O’s in GO ON are drawn in different fonts (the latter with a sorta dash/slash through it) ought to call attention to their separateness.
It’s kind of similar to the now archaic “noöne” spelling of modern “no one”. Trailing “e” or not you’d never think to pronounce noön as “noon”.
Their GO 𝛳N (my best but inadequate effort at reproducing their orthography) is clearly not GOON and IMO people are trying a little too hard to giggity this one.
The relentless pursuit of clicks will be the downfall of everything sane. Harrumph!
But it is fun!
I don’t see two fonts. They are clearly either a modified typeface or custom lettering. It works as a cohesive whole, and does not at all look like two letterforms to me. It see “GOON YOU’RE FREE.” And I didn’t even think of the other meaning of “goon” until afterwards, as I’m more used to hearing it in the form “gooning.”
I agree that “font” is not quite the right technical term for what I mean. My vocabulary doesn’t go any deeper into typography so that’s the term I came up with.
But if you look at the three pix in the OP’s cite, and especially the middle one of a hand holding a drink cup, you can clearly see that the decorative details of the two Os are distinctly different. Akin to the distinction between a letter with and without some sort of diacritic.
The G & the N of course have very different gross shapes, but the decorative details are clearly of the same style.
Why the Os are drawn with those differences is an interesting question I have no clue about. But that the Os really are drawn differently is clear fact.
Because it looks cool. Like old-fashioned illuminated capitals. It gives visual variation and interest. It’s supposed to look illustrative. It’s not uncommon for some actual trypefaces, especially ones echoing a hand-drawn aesthetic, to have multiple letterforms to choose from if you want to make them look more varied and organic.
Thank you. You’re clearly much more informed about this stuff than I.
“Is that what the kids are calling these days?” has become a cliche.
Some new I now have to google.
OK, but the issue in this case was ad execs not knowing/realizing this slang would be popular enough to bring them embarrassment - or infamy, perhaps. I’d in the very least recommend a more diverse workforce.
Reminds me of a favorite typo “joke”: “Teb Kemendy, Loin of the Senate”, with a mirrored letter, a failed kerning, and transposed letters.
(I realize that absolutely nothing will shake you from your dug-in position that any and all cities that I could produce represent a pupulation that doesn’t count.)
Reddit??? But the first one would be good if it wasnt dated two days after our Ops article, in other words, it is likely a copy-cat article (but by no means plagiarism) .
But I admit that “gooning” is indeed a current slang term. What I wont agree is if it is “common”.

Well, gooning certainly is, but goon? Maybe. And it was meant to be GO ON, obviously. But yeah, someone might have caught the bad kerning at least. There I will agree.
My take is it’s a manufactured controvery chasing clicks.
Out in the real world, people, whether aware of goon as masturbation slang or not, aren’t giving a shit.
But boy are the dueling botnets talking it up.
Let’s face it: this is just one of ten thousands of memes and viral going things of the last 25 years, so we’ll amuse ourselves for a few days with it. And overanalyse it, like Dopers are wont to do. It will be forgotten forever in a few days.
I think it just got written up because people are amused. Although I suppose some outraged mother from somewhere is organizing a Wicked boycott. I’ll happily participate.

Exactly. It isn’t a big “controversy”, it is funny.
Reddit???
The user base of Reddit is more than the entire population of the United States. Young, on-line, social media culture is global culture now. Your generation and mine are increasing irrelevant side shows. Not only does the future not belong to us, neither does the present. Deal with it.

Boycotting outraged mothers? Count me in.
If I had seen that image, I would have assumed that it said “Goon, you’re free!”, but I would also have assumed that it was something that the Witch said to one of her flying monkeys or something. Steve Rogers gets that reference.
And if someone had told me that the image was unintentionally sexual, I’d have assumed that they were referring to the dildo the witch is holding.
Although I suppose some outraged mother from somewhere is organizing a Wicked boycott. I’ll happily participate.
You, too? I made it around a 3rd of the way into the first movie before giving up. (And I read the book years before it became a musical.)
Plus “The Fappening” is a cleverish punny name. What would the goon version be?
Goonapalooza.
