>
> Unfortunately simply because you feel this way doesn’t make it so. Florida law has shown that the Courts have the power to invalidate election results and order a new election. Whether or not they **should** do that is very much open for debate. The fact that the Florida courts **have** stepped in prior to this should illustrate, even to the most rabid supporter of Governor Bush, that there is precedent for a court challenge.

> > \*\*
>
> I think that’s a bit of hyperbole. I don’t exactly see Rutherford Hayes’ name reviled throughout history because of the fraudulent manner in which he gained the presidency. It’s a footnote in history, prior to 3 days ago; it was interesting only to historians, professional political theorists and twisted trivia junkies such as myself (and others).
>
> Assuming that the recount numbers hold, and Vice President Gore decides that it would be better not to pursue a court challenge, would Governor Bush’s presidency be any **more** legitimate? He would have become president by taking advantage of a flawed ballot that disenfranchised a significant portion of voters in a single county in Florida. His presidency would be based on subverting the will of the people, would it not? There is substantial evidence to suggest that more people went to the polls in Florida intending to vote for Vice President Gore than for Governor Bush. By your logic, Governor Bush will be tainted forever because of the manner in which he won the election.
>
> Personally, I don’t believe either case to be true. If Vice President Gore decides not to press a court challenge, Governor Bush is the legitimate winner of the presidential election. If, there is a court challenge and the vote totals are left to stand as they are, Governor Bush will still be the legitimate winner. If, in the extremely unlikely event that the result of a judicial review leads to a new vote in Palm Beach County, and Vice President Gore is elected by a wide enough margin to give him the state’s electoral votes, his presidency would be just as legitimate as Governor Bush’s.

>
> You cannot simply dismiss the questions that have been raised about the ballots with a statement about how it should have been corrected prior to the election. Once again, I agree that the flaws with the ballots should have been addressed prior to the election. Not, as you seem to think, because any objection to them is now invalid, but because this entire clusterfuck would have been **avoided** in the first place.
>
> The question is simply whether or not the flawed ballots disenfranchised enough people so that judicial relief is warranted. The standard is “a significant non-compliance”. Whether or not it meets that standard is not a question that I can answer. Nor is it a question you can answer. That is something only a judge can decide. For every election law expert that you find that says there’s no basis for the suit, there’s another that says there is plenty of evidence. The 1997 mayoral election in Miami certainly established precedent that allows the court system to redress issues of voter irregularities. Once again, I don’t necessarily believe that Vice President Gore should go through a court challenge; I think the downside for him outweighs any possible upside. There is a very important distinction between a pragmatic decision and having no legitimate cause for action.

>
> Is the Republican resistance to a thorough recount any less ridiculous? If anything, it strikes me as more so. Iowa, Wisconsin and New Mexico are all close enough to deserve a recount. In New Mexico, the difference has narrowed to some 164 votes according to an AP report _(As seen on MSNBC 4:44 pm)_ and has caused MSNBC to take New Mexico and label it as ‘undecided’. A hand recount there certainly seems warranted. James Baker portrayed the Republicans as feeling that additional recounts are unnecessary in Florida. In my view, recounts are needed everywhere that the votes are this close. With the difference down to 327 votes out of a total of over six million cast, the margin is on the order of 0.00545%.
> The national popular vote has narrowed to a difference of 18,199 votes, with California having up to 1,000,000 absentee ballots still to count.
>
> It also seems difficult for the Republicans to seize the moral high-ground when some are calling for court challenges to the vote total in Wisconsin, alleging fraud on the part of at least one Democrat supporter. If it’s proper in one area, i fail to see how it’s improper in another.

>
> I’d have to disagree with you on this one. I think Governor Bush’s actions have been somewhat presumptuous. This is purely an opinion, as you said, but in my view, he seems to be acting almost as a prince awaiting his inevitable coronation than a candidate who may (or may not) have won the presidency. It doesn’t bother me that he is actually thinking and considering how to handle the transition; two months is a short time in which to set up a new government. What bothers me is that he and his subordinates leaked it to the press in order to impress upon the people that he was being ‘presidential’.
> Again, I think we all bring our own preconceptions and personal ideas about ‘proper behavior’ in this situation to the table with us. It’s not a major point against (or for) him. Just a minor difference I have in interpretation.
>
> Personally, I don’t think either party has come off particularly well in this situation. The Democrats do seem to be combative and prematurely threatening a court case before the recount is even finished. The Republicans seem to be attempting to hurry through the recounts and begrudge any attempt to further investigate what **may be** legitimate questions about the election. Nor do the screaming idiots in the streets of Palm Beach County do anything to enhance the image of either party.
>
> The more I consider it, the more I come to the conclusion that a court case brought by Vice President Gore would be a mistake. Not, I emphasize, because there is no merit to the idea that there is cause, but because, no matter what the outcome, he will end up losing. That said, I stand amazed that people will assert that an important consideration in denying the merits of a court challenge is that “you can always find irregularities and anomalies”. This line of reasoning completely escapes me. The right to vote is too precious to diminish it in such a backhanded manner. I realize that the voting system is not perfect, but to say that we shouldn’t look under the rug because we’re going to find dust is shortsighted. Each and every case of irregularity should be investigated. To accept that they exist and yet pretend that they don’t matter seems intrinsically ridiculous.
> \*\*

Unfortunately simply because you feel this way doesn’t make it so.

Ankh\_Too

1. “Whether or not Vice President Gore should, or should not, turn to a judicial solution if he feels that the ballot design in Palm Beach County is open to debate.”
You’ve been a kid too, right? What do you think of the schoolground kid who agrees to the toss of a coin, or rock, paper, scissors and then complains when he loses? Enough said. Don’t fucking complain after you lose. Complain before.

2. “Assuming that the recount numbers hold, and Vice President Gore decides that it would be better not to pursue a court challenge, would Governor Bush’s presidency be any more legitimate?”
Yes. Bush IS the legitimate winner. It’s GORE the rat who’s challenging the legitimate winner.

3. “The question is simply whether or not the flawed ballots disenfranchised enough people so that judicial relief is warranted.”
This statement is stupid. Are you forgetting something? The disenfranchisment goes both ways. It would have confused Gore as well as Bush voters unless you think that Gore are more stupid. You’ve fallen for the Democrat rhetoric that all the lost votes from the fucking incompetents go to Gore. Maybe they have some inside information on why only stupid fuckers vote for Gore and smart people vote for Bush.

4. “We are a nation of law, or so we claim with a great deal of satisfaction. It was one of the founding precepts of this country. The tendency of people to turn to the law as a way to redress what they perceive to be injustices should not come as a surprise to you, or anyone else.”
Get off your fucking moral high horse. In this country, if you see a sign that says “Caution, wet floor” and you slip you can still fucking sue them. It’s a fucking joke. There is no justice. I know, I’m retired now, but I have been the unintended beneficiary of such lawsuits. The law is being twisted around to fuck people any which way they can be fucked every day. This country’s tort law needs to be reformed. You and I are both paying for this.

Your post may be couched in nice words, but your whole post is naive. Your naivite is incredible.

Castrate yourself, shit-for-brains, if you can find a precision tool delicate enough for that micro-task.
Obviously you support George W. Bush, which says that you are either 1)a knowing but greedy sonofabitch with no social conscience whatsoever, or 2) a major loser made comfortable by a president who poses no threat to your own limited capabilities. Based on your eminently forgetable posts, I place you in the second category.

As your posts read like the effusions of a deranged retard, I won’t waste bandwidth by rebutting you on a point-by-point basis. I’ll conclude instead by instructing you to change your name ever so slightly: Major Blowhard says it all.

Thank you so much, **Mandelstam** , for the thoughts and language that will help to heal the country in a time of great division and potential crisis. So eloquent, thoughtful, and, well, just darn outright inspiring. Lord knows, we need more with your ability to see beyond partisan leanings, to realize that, in the end, we’re all just Americans. God bless you, and God bless America.

Yeesh, Johnson, Joe Lieberman himself couldn’t be more trite.

As to my avowed partisanship. Yes, you’ve nailed me. I have political beliefs. I’m not willing accept meaningless platitudes like “compassionate conservative” and “unifier, not a divider.” (And yes, there is plenty lacking on the other ticket too.) W. is a rich man’s candidate with just enough of a good-'ol-boy mentality to appeal to losing
average Joes who like the fact that the man can’t speak English and talks in garbled soundbites. Oh, that’s right. He also appeals to studs like you who get wet dreaming of making a killing on the stock market with their payroll taxes.

Don’t make me laugh, fuckwit. A lecture on civics from you is like a advice on dieting from Rush Limbaugh.

Okay, Beak, you make a good point. Rush did have his mouth surgically clamped long enough to sweat some lard off his flabby butt.

Choose, if you please, any of the following:

A lecture on civics from Johnson is like…

a) advice on hair loss from Rush Limbaugh.

b) personality lessons from Dick Cheney.

c) marriage counseling from Newt Gingrich.

d) investment banking guidance from Neil Bush.

e) sex tips from Bob Dole.

f) fashion updates from Barbara Bush.

and, in a spirit of bipartisanship,

g) chastity training from Bill Clinton.

You know, somehow I don’t think you’re a newbie. You’re someone using a new name. Based on your post, you’re a total idiot and loser.

You have no idea which candidate stands for what. Were you one of those morons who carried one of those “Re-vote now” signs?

As a matter of fact, I am a self made person with a lot of social conscience. I care about where this country is going to, which is to hell, due to morons like you. I am one of the millions of people who pay taxes, support the community and that the country counts on.

Let me change your name slightly too, to Mandelfuck. And that’s the mistake your parents made. They fucked and created you.

Let me dumb down my earlier response for those who can apparently only use four-letter words (well, fuckwit is a seven-letter word). When you assert, as you did, **Mandelstam** that anyone who would vote for Bush is either a selfish greedy pig or an idiot who doesn’t know any better, you’re just being inflammatory and, well, stupid. Yes, I’m a Republican, and a rather conservative one at that. Yes, I voted for Bush. Yes, all things considered there were better potential candidates. But I don’t think that everyone who voted for Gore is either a) too lacking in self-confidence to make it on their own in this world or b) simply moronic for voting for the party that gave us Lani Guinier and made “White House intern” a phrase that can actually get giggles.

I’m of the opinion that the majority of supporters of both candidates are people of good will who differ in their opinions, but who can get along. Then, there’s the minority (yes, on both sides), who are numbskulls like you.

Geez, getting a civics lesson from **Mandelstam** is like

[list][li]getting campaign advice from Bill Bradley[/li][li]getting public relations advice from Trent Lott[/li][li]getting advice on race relations from Al Sharpton[/li][li]getting skiing lessons from Sonny Bono[/li][li]getting fashion advice from Madeline Albright (or Hillary, for that matter); and, well[/li]wiping your ass with a brick.

A better analogy would be if you were playing flip the coin, you call heads, it lands in the guy’s palm and you see it’s head, but then he drops it, it lands on the ground tails up, and tails is declared the winner.

You’re assuming that Gore fairly lost the election. The assumption by his staff and many, many voters in that he won the election, only to have it taken away by human error.

I agree that you can’t complain if you lose fairly, but you can if you lost unfairly. Or do you believe that a person should just shut up and take it when he loses a court case because of juror error? That you should just accept the loss of funds when the bank makes a mistake?

That said, I think he should accept the recount, whatever it maybe. Not because I think it’s fair to him or his voters, but because I think we’re becoming extremely polarized as a nation over this and need to move on to healing the rapidly growing divide between dem and reps.

Obviously you support Al Gore, which says that you either

1. Are a communist who can’t stand the fact that people who are not as lazy as you might go out and actually do something with their lives, and since they worked hard while you did nothing, think you should get a cut of their money. Meanwhile, since you had a lot of time on your hands while you were doing nothing, you studied up on some worthless “cause” that you could spend other peoples money on. I mean hey, just because some guy worked hard and started his own company and worked 20 hours a day for 10 years to make it grow and prosper and finally got a financial return on it, meanwhile employing hundreds of people and sharing his money with them so they could have jobs and start their own families and lives, that’s no reason not to steal his profits and give it to your buddies cause you were all just too damn stupid and lazy to get off your asses and do something for yourself. Let’s steal from those with drive and initiative and vision who contribute positively to our society to give to those who feel no responsibility to do anything but for themselves, if even then!

or

1. Just too dumb to realize that #1 is going on and, as such, may have been involved in that whole Palm Beach County thing and inadvertently voted for Buchanan. It’s that whole “inability to think” thing. I think it’s pretty indicative of the democratic party actually. “I can’t think and therefore voted incorrectly. I demand a revote! In the meantime I’ve retained some attorneys to come up with a billion reasons that my inability to think is not, in fact, my fault. So there.”

I am completely new to this site although I’ve had more than my share of cyberdebate. And you’re right, I must be a total idiot and a loser or I’d find better things to do than reply to your drivel.

For the record, I agree with those who, like Beak, believe that there should be careful recounting in any state where the vote is close enough to change. In the meantime, W. should look after that lump of shit on his face and stop trying to play president-elect. His arrogant failure to notice that he hasn’t yet won is–well, it’s exactly what I’d expect of a rich kid frat boy who never earned his way into anything.

Unless evidence emerges of fraud, I don’t think there should be a re-vote. Though, if the ballot is deemed illegal according to Florida state law, my personal wish and yours will be irrelevant. If we all cared about the national interest as much as some profess to, we would watch basketball for a while until these ballots are fully counted. In the meantime I don’t think the country will fall apart. It will certainly do no worse than it did when a needless impeachment proceeding was pushed through for _totally_ partisan reasons by a bunch of hypocritical Republicans. Where, Johnson, were your cries for healing then, when congress was trying to unseat a popular president for getting some head from a consenting adult?

[the Major bloweth on, taking exception to my characterization of typical Republicans]

I don’t know what I’m supposed to make of this? Either it’s that Blowhard should be made patriot of the year b/c he pays taxes, or it’s that whereas my parents fucked when I was conceived, Blowhard is “a self made person”–kind of like the Frankestein monster but with no doctor.

As to supporting your community, well geez whiz, Major, if I’d thought you were the kind of guy who volunteered to coach little league, I’d have gone easier on you. Now I have this idea that you must look like Mr. Wilson in the old Dennis the Menace TV show. Let me modify my original observation.

Republicans like you may well believe that they have the best interest of the country at heart when you rally behind a candidate like Bush. Most of your information comes from TV commercials or partisan rags. That, at any rate, is a generous account of why you would support a candidate who wants to give heaping taxcuts to millionaires; gut people’s ability to sue corporations that fuck them over; leave companies to regulate their own environmental practices (!!!); and stack the Supreme Court with a bunch of bible-thumping wackos who believe that women shouldn’t be allowed to have control over their own bodies.

And, Johnson, if you’re reading, this is why, whatever the outcome of this election, I can’t partake of the namby-pamby bipartisan cocktail that you want to sell. As someone who pays significant attention to what is actually going on this country, I feel no obligation whatever to gulp down steaming buckets of Republican piss just because you want to hold my hand on the Internet.

Anybody see the little news item about what, exactly, inspired all these PBC blue-hairs to scream “I voted wrong! The ballot was confusing!”

Democratic telemarketers.

The Dems heard _a few_ anecdotes about butterfly ballot confusion, then changed their taped phone messages urging people to get out and vote on election day to a message telling people the ballot was confusing and urging them to complain if they thought they mistakenly voted for a candidate other than Gore (_hint-hint_)

How very … Democratic.

As for the 19,000 spoiled ballots (which, it has been clearly pointed out, is not unusual AT ALL), now it appears many had no punch for president. And a great many could very well be ballots which were replaced with new, accurately tallied ballots when a person told an election staffer they had made a mistake and needed a new one.

So, Gore voters get to vote twice? You’re going to put unmarked ballots into the Gore column because that’s what the people really meant?

How very … Democratic.

Actually the perfect analogy is agreeing to play flip the coin with a quarter, now the dems come back and complain the quarter is too small or it’s weighted more on the tails side and they should have used a half dollar. Well

1. Both parties agreed to the quarter prior to the flip.
2. The quarter has been used many times before.
3. You think the dems would be complaining and challenging if the flip had come their way?

Mandelstamm:

The world is neither black nor white. Neither are the the 2 candidates. (I happen to be pro-choice.) Unfortunately, we don’t have 20 candidates to choose from. In truth, we are not really voting the man Gore or the man Bush as our King to do whatever he chooses. We are voting for the ideology behind the candidate more than anything else. My reasons for voting for either party is too complicated and beyond the scope of this scope of this thread anyway. So don’t let’s get into the why and stick to why Gore is a fraud and a sore loser. Sincerely, Major Fuck You.

**Mandelstam** –
I have no desire to hold your hand over the Internet or in any other fashion–I don’t want to have to reach that far up your bowels.

Reasonable people can heartily and aggressively debate issues without impugning the motives of opponents. Reasonable people can recognize that, even though Democrats are wrong most of the time, they are still reasonable, decent people.

Most importantly, reasonable people can determine that you are, in fact, spewing bile with no constructive purpose, and your “significant attention” to what goes on in this country comes from the local 6:00 news and the front page of _USA Today_.

All Al was doing was waiting for FLORIDA LAW to do what it is set up to, including:

“If any paper ballot is damaged or defective so that it cannot be counted properly by the automatic tabulating equipment, the ballot shall be counted manually at the counting center by the canvassing board. . .”

But Bushy, terrified that his fragile grip on power would be lost, \ ***goes to court to stop the law from doing what is right and provided for** [i/i]

If that isn’t sore loser behavior, nothing is.

He’s a disgusting hypocrite.

Gore loses.

Gore challenges but he’s not a sore loser.

Bush challenges the challenge and he is.

This opinion wouldn’t happen to be based on your personal preference as to who you’d like to win would it?

Do you use any logic?

Do you even think about what you are saying, or do you just post whatever comes into your head?
