Gore's Florida victory lost in 9/11 smokescreen?

**Actually, elucidator, Florida law provides that:

– the candidate with the most votes wins, and
– the way to find out who has more votes is to count the votes.

Non sequitor?

Gee, December where were you when I needed you? You broke that down into bite size chunks so a poor ol’ retarded country boy like me can get a grasp of the issues.

So, you just count them all up and the guy with the mostest is the bestest?

This most likely wore you out, you oughta go rest for a while. I’ll let you know if I need anything more out of you.

{Insert Pit-worthy saracasm here…}

I am very pleased with the approach President Bush it taking.

I’m extremely pleased that AL GORE (!!!) has no input to anything; what a dork.

There is no doubt in my mind that many people voted for Buchanan, believing they were voting for Gore. Had that ballot been designed correctly, the outcome of the election would have been different.

If that mistake had been made by a Republican, we’d be in much worse straits, in my view. Because it was made by a Democrat, we may safely assume it was just that - a mistake, and not an attempt to improperly gain votes.

In either case, though, the case is moot. We would more profitably occupy ourselves talking about what measures would prevent any such problems in 2004.

Putting aside the reliability of the O.P.'s source (which I also do not find credible, for the reasons so effectively laid out already), many here have argued that the issue of who would have won the election had it been actually been allowed is now moot. Old news. Irrelevant.

To my mind, this represents a disgracefully apathetic view! How can it be so uninteresting to so many people that we, the very founders of representational democracy, are so insouciant about what our real choice actually was and the fact that our choice was bypassed and ignored?

Yes, the real outcome doesn’t change who’s in office. Yes, the real outcome cannot change or undo history. So what?

How can it be considered unimportant what our choice actually was? How can it be of so little interest to us that, by the basest form of judicial misconduct, our choice was denied us?

I’ve seen some views of my American fellow citizens that have made me very sad, but this lack of concern for the nations’ voice has a special poignancy all its own…

Good call, Bricker.
So whaddya think of the “Ford/Carter” Report?

Just my 2sense

Keep trying. Maybe a rubber mallet to the head would shake up some of the knuckleheads. I can’t wait for, “The 2000 Election Fiasco: Part II, 2004 Pennsylvania” (or wherever). The whole country has paper ballot, access, and spoiled ballot problems. Rather than do anything constructive, focus on the last election which cannot be revisited except through impeachment. Then, when it happens again, we can start more angry, venemous, partisan threads. Florida: is reforming as we kick the dead horse that is this issue. Optical scanners and a standardized ballot look to be on the way. But, thank goodness for the ACLU. (yes, I did use the “World Socialists,” feel free to quote their silliness) The ACLU stepped right up to oppose the onerous sign requirement in the new law.

That is unfair, next they will expect you to be able to breathe on your own. Under the laws which restricted literacy tests the ACLU challenges “know his or her precinct and its hours of operation.” Ignorance really is strength. The arguments against ID are hilarious. “They don’t have photo ID…” “Well, without photo ID how will they be able to prove they are who they say they are?,” Beagle wondered aloud.

The horse may be dead, but the quest for knowledge and facts should remain alive until we know the truth. It is not a trivial or foolish desire to want to know the truth about such an important event. Jimmy Hoffa is dead. It follows from your arguments that no one should care who killed him since it was a long time ago and no one can do anything about it!

As for the reformations in Florida, I find it quite interesting that Katherine Harris now suddenly insists that hand counts are the only way to resolve a close election.

Um… “moot” means “deprived of practical significance; made abstract or purely academic.” Surely that’s an accurate word to describe this controversy.

If you believe, as you seem to, that “the basest form of judicial misconduct” came into play, it only seems logical that you should be proposing solutions that will prevent the basest form of judicial misconduct from again deciding an election.

I assure you, ambushed, that I have a special, deep, and abiding concern for “the nation’s voice,” and I strongly deny your apparent characterization of me as insouciant on this issue.

I am simply unwilling to devote time and energy to arguing a point which clearly offers no definitve answer, but does offer clear guidance towards the future. Merely reading the preceding posts on this thread make it clear that there is no way to definitively answer just what the “nation’s voice” - or that part of it residing in West Palm Beach, anyway - would have said. Many people voted for Buchanan in error. But what is the remedy? The Florida Supreme Court had a role in determining what votes to count - whether you like their ruling or not, surely you agree that having a court involved in recounting standards is not ideal. The U.S. Supreme Court had a role in determining what votes to count - whether you like their ruling or not, surely you agree that having another court involved in recounting standards is not ideal.

Given the situation, no counting solution now would definitively answer the question to the satisfaction of all parties. It simply cannot be done. And since, even if such an answer could be developed, it would have only academic interest, and no practical effect, it is properly described as ‘moot.’

What are your suggestions for assuring that we don’t have this problem again in 2004, and what have you done about making them happen?

  • Rick

No, not even close, think it over. If we could find who killed Hoffa, we could arrest, try, and convict them. Meanwhile, back on this topic, if every newspaper in the world agrees that Gore won, NOTHING can be done about it. The election is over, Gore challenged it–his Democratic canvassing boards let him down.

Are you serious? Do you have a cite for this? Does anyone want to watch my fuckin’ head explode?

No! Certainly not! However, if you have any of Ms. Harris’, Wicked Witch of the South, head exploding please put them up on your web site toot sweet!
