What’s up with our 2%: My wife was about to empty a full, unopened gallon of milk (which expired today) when something either of us has never seen before took place. When she went to pour the wasted milk down the drain, it was the consistency of snot. It was smooth, white, and slow. Not quite gelatinous, nor was it rank, like curdled milk. It almost looked like Elmer?s glue, but thicker, and globby like “pieces” would break off when we tipped the gallon upright again. So what kind of substance do we have on our hands here? I’m equal parts fascinated & disturbed… ---

Sounds like you had inadvertently made (something like) yoghurt. ---

Yeah! kinda like yoghurt… but waaaay thicker, and snot-like. Maybe I should mix in some strawberrys? Ok, that’s the last time i’m saying “snot”. ---

I wouldn’t - although it may _look_ a bit like yoghurt, there is no simple way to tell what sort of bacteria you have cultured in there - it could make you quite ill. ---

Are you guys ready for this? Prop’s go to my wife’s grandmother, who grew up in the deep parts of Tennessee. She knew exactly what it was… Clabber. Apparently, Clabbered milk has been an ol’ time treat down there in the south, and occurs when UNPASTUERIZED milk is allowed to naturally thicken or curdle. But the result is not rank or lumpy, but Glue-like and smooth. Note to self: stop buying milk at the dollar store. Hey, I’m glad I read this thread, since it clears up a long-time mystery for me. One year I came back to the dorm after the between semester/Christmas break and made the mistake of buying a carton of milk from the basement vending machine that clearly hadn’t been serviced since we went away. The milk poured exactly the way you described – glub glub glub as clots of silky-smooth thickness broke off the main body and fell – only in my case it was _chocolate_ milk. I’ll spare you the descriptive names we came up with for this interesting substance.
