Well, I don’t find him creepy. I’ve found his threads interesting and I kind of get what he’s looking for. He’s attracted to something, a kind of girl mainly but maybe more just a mindset or way of life, and I think he’s trying to find a label for it so he can more easily explore what interests him about it. I’m a happily married female who is not stalking anyone for nefarious purposes, and I find myself in love with some of it too. I think “hipster” isn’t quite it… The car commercial linked to in one of the threads and the farm girls are the closest to it, for me anyway… A sort of wispy, folksy, romantic, organic world that to me is more hippie than hipster (I know some have argued it’s the same thing, but I think the uber-trendy haircuts and trendy clubbing and deliberate seeking out of obscure music and ideas is part of “hipster” and not really what appeals to him at all) but even hippie isn’t quite right either. I don’t have a word for it and even in this post find myself frustrated trying to pin down the je ne sais quoi that is appealling, and I empathize with his attempts to get his head around it. ---

People who practice what my husband calls the “grandmotherly arts” like baking, canning, fiber arts, gardening, or basketry but probably also have tattoos or piercings or whatever. ---

Yes, I think crunchy is probably a closer term than hippie, though I tend to associate both with being a little farther down the vegan, unwashed, let’s-raise-our-child-to-be-nongendered trail than, say, the couple in the car commercial in the other thread. I’ve never heard “neo-hippie”… I’ll have to go google it, maybe that’s the term I’m looking for. ---

Well, there are degrees of crunchy, not to mention the difference between crunchy and “followed Phish too damn long.” I consider myself and **DoctorJ** to be fairly crunchy–we bake our own bread, cure our own bacon, keep backyard chickens, tend toward buying organic/sustainable/local foodstuffs, and are involved in the local non-profit arts collective. We both bathe regularly, use real deodorant instead of those rock thingies, and hold down mainstream jobs. Neither of us has dreadlocks or owns a dashiki. We don’t smoke pot. We do know lots of people who are way crunchier than us, and others who are unreconstructed old-school hippies, because there is a significant degree of overlap of interests there. I haven’t read most of the threads in question, but if the car commercial you’re talking about is the one with the camping honeymoon and the pouring rain, the term you’re looking for might also be indie. ---

You can count me amongst the creeped out. I can’t help but suspect that the true purpose of his threads is to get us to comment on his wank material. The alternative is that he’s just a boring one-trick pony, which is bad enough. ---

I haven’t found GovernmentMan creepy, just frustrating. It seems like every exchange with him involves hitting a reset button on the issue of hipster. It’s like he’s not registering the other participants in the conversation. ---
