Governor Blagojevich taken into custody this morning

There are already legislators starting to rush through a bill changing the law that allows the guv the ability to appoint a vacant senate seat. In either case, the senate has the right to simply not seat whoever is appointed.

An impeachment process is possible, I’d say most likely. And yes, if he’s convicted, he’s also unemployed.

The problem is, the governor would have to sign it for it to pass, and he can just “pocket veto” it (leave it on his desk and not bother to sign, then the congressional period expires).

FOUR percent? Seriously? I bet the flu virus would poll better than that. At least the flu virus gets people time off from work.

So what would they replace a gubernatorial appointment with? A special election?

I know the Senate has the right to expel members for whatever they decide is bad behavior, but do they ALSO have the right to simply refuse to accept new senator, with no allegations of bad behavior? Could they do this to someone elected as well – simply toss aside election results and refuse to seat someone?

I love this line!

Probably; but only by a 2/3 vote.

Everybody’s in despair, every girl and boy,
but when Quinn the Governor gets here,
everybody’s gonna jump for joy.

 Well done.

Your winnings, Monsieur.

She could very well be hella pissed at him for getting caught, though.

Um , can he pardon himself ? (legally speaking)

Declan

I believe this would be a federal offense, and a governor would not be able to issue a pardon for that.

Yes, it’s a Federal investigation and his case would land in U.S. district court in Chicago, most likely. The governor could not pardon himself for federal offenses.

What a stupid asshole. He must have slept through Democrats 101, wherein they teach you that Democrats only do sex scandals and Republicans only do graft. He’s given a bad name to all of us.

I must remember to remind William Jefferson and Larry Craig of that.

The thing about Illinois, is the people elect the same old thing time and again. People are so entrenched you can’t govern effectively unless you do “deals.”

Even city workers at minor level benefit. They get in and you see things like file clerks making $45,000 a year. And they VOTE. If you try to vote someone out of office, they have enough city workers to keep them in. OR you have the split, if some clean guy looks like he’s gonna get in, they simply run another candidate, so the vote splits three ways and it prevents the honest guy from getting the most.

Obama and G-Rod did many deals together. You also heard G-Rod mad because Obama wouldn’t give him nothing.

People say “Oh that means Obama’s clean.” No it doesn’t. All it means it that NOW Obama wouldn’t give him anything. Who knows what Obama said he’d give before the election and then backed out.

With ALL the corruption agains G-Rod I want to know WHY the FBI waited till AFTER the elections? Why not do it before? Even without the buy a senate seat, issue there was more than enough.

Perhaps it was done now because Obama promised something then backed out saying “I’m president now, you can’t touch me.” Then Obama decided to get G-Rod back so his candidate could be appointed, so he worked with the FBI to close it now.

The timing is way too perfect for Obama NOT to be involved in getting G-Rod.

I’m not saying Obama DID anything. I’m sure HE didn’t. But that doesn’t mean he didn’t have his people do it and just look the other way, like Reagan did with Abscam.

We all know Reagan didn’t DO anything, but we all “know” Reagan wasn’t as in the dark as he said he was.

I’m trying to say that she got caught too. Here’s the Trib’s take on it: Governor's wife supported his pay-to-play Senate scheme, complaint alleges

Got a cite?

Yeah, maybe Obama said he’d help Blago. And maybe Martians will invade tomorrow. Got any evidence that Obama ever considered assisting Blagojevich in any way?

Got me. Perhaps they didn’t have enough solid evidence.

That’s a nice conspiracy theory there. Got some evidence?

Bull.

Mark, you’re just throwing shit here and hoping something will stick. Shut up.

Or perhaps there wasn’t a senate seat to sell until now. Jesus.

It’s hard to tell what you’re saying, period.

Blagojevich’s comments were mostly about what he wanted to do and hoped to do. It’s not clear at any point that he actually communicated with any of Obama’s people. He hoped for a favor in return for appointing Jarrett or someone else they favored, but gave no indication he’d been promised one or lead to expect one. In fact, he says the opposite - he says he doesn’t want to give Jarrett the job because Obama’s people aren’t offering him a reward.
