Grammar - 'may' or 'might'

Could one (or more) of the Dope’s grammar experts please explain the difference between “may” and “might”? Every so often I read or hear something that uses the word “may” in a way that sounds wrong to me, where “might” would be the more appropriate word, or vice versa. But it might be me who’s wrong—or should I say “it may be me who’s wrong”? In the case of “They might be giants” it is referring to the remote chance that a windmill is actually a giant

In case it needs to be said: The band They Might Be Giants took its name from the movie of that name, which took its title from this.
