Grammar question (comma use)

When I read the sentence in the OP, I do a double take and have to read it again before I realize, yes, there’s only one valid interpretation. But a reader shouldn’t have to work that hard. I think that sentence should probably be two sentences. (I also don’t like the passive voice here.)
The Telegraph has confirmed that Oscar Pistorius, the Paralympic athlete, has sold his Pretoria home to pay legal fees for his criminal defense. Pistorius is currently on trial for the premeditated murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, who was shot dead in his home.
