Great movies that somehow got by you

Leon comes from the time before DVDs, and there might have director cut versions on Laserdisc somewhere. I was a fan of the film, and I think only Japan got to see a release of the directors cut for a long time before it was released in the US a number of years after the original films release. The additional scenes were perhaps dropped due to the nature of the film.

Weirdly I was sure I’d seen a different version on the original rental VHS I rented. Could be that I filled in gaps which weren’t there. But I’m sure there are scenes which I thought happened, which didn’t. It could have been a Tarantino ear trick. So when I saw the directors cut, it was different from the version I thought I watched.

However, the significant extra parts of the Leon directors cut (over 20 minutes) are taking Matilda on hits, a couple of extended scenes, and something which brought more ambiguity into the relationship. It’s a movie which some people half watch, or read about, and jump to conclusions as if the Europeans were much comfortable with paedophelia than the rest of us. When it’s clearly a young girl with a crush, and a lonely man needing to be a father. Leon wakes up in the same bed as Matilda one night, and those on the end of a ledge ready to jump to conclusions might have taken it as something else. It wasn’t.

A Dark song was certainly one of the more interesting “horrors” of recent years, I reckon.
