Rocn-n-Rolgaand rackrnsack - hey, Peter Perett !!!
Thanks for the reminder. no idea what sex you are but I love yer both. Brilliant memories
I MUST second Dave Matthew’s Two Step and add Rolling Stones’ Painted Black.
Holiday in Cambodia, as an earlier poster said. Specifically, the Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables version.
Police Truck
Riot
And on the non DK front:
Come Out and Play, by the Offspring
I want to correct this one: its Rolling Stones - Paint it, Black
Led Zeppelin - Kashmir, Heartbreaker, and Stairway of course
Aerosmith - Dream On, Walk this Way, Sweet Emotion
AC/DC - Thunderstruck, Back in Black, Hells Bells
Guns N’ Roses - Paradise City, November Rain
Rolling Stones - Start me Up, Satisfaction, Brown Sugar, Jumpin’ Jack Flash, Bitch
i know there are a few good ones i’m missing…but i dont want to think of them all right now
I’m surprised that no one has mentioned a certain song by Deep Purple. The rest of the song isn’t that great, but the opening riff is probably one of the most memorable of rock.
NIN’s live version of “Terible Lie” also has a great intro.
And as good as the intros by Ozzie that have already been mentioned are, I think that they pale in comparison to that of “Mr. Crawly”.
A few more nominations for Pink Floyd:
“Another Brick in the Wall, Part II”.
“Shine on, You Crazy Diamond”
I have to admit, “Smoke on the Water” was the first song that sprang to mind…followed closely by “Cocaine” (Clapton).
My two favorites are
Rolling Stones: Gimme Shelter
and
Dire Straits: Making Movies
both use a minor key in the introduction and always manage to make me shiver when I hear them.
“Ain’t talking 'Bout Love” by Van Halen
The demonic guitar “intro” (first few seconds) always accelerates my metabolism a few ticks…
Another Dire Straits song: Down to the Waterline.
Also, Telegraph Road. Private Investigations.
OK. I’ve got another brain wave. Here are some more:
- Queen - Who wants to live forever?
- Asia - Heat of the Moment (Yeaaaaah!!! Rock!!)
- Power Station - Some like it hot
Here’s some of my favs:
-
“Baby Got Back” by Sir Mix-a-Lot–“Oh my God…look at her butt.”
-
“Don’t Believe the Hype” by Public Enemy
-
“Santa Monica” by Everclear
-
“Brandenburg Concerto #5, 1st mvmt.” by Bach
-
“Tocatta in D”, also by Bach–if you are not scared by the opening, then you have no pulse.
“My Sharona” by the Knack–intro’s better than the whole song…definitely better than the lyrics.
"Heartbreaker/Livin’ Lovin’ Maid (She’s just a woman) by Led Zeppelin
“Rock Lobster” by the B-52’s
“Day Tripper” by the Beatles
When I first heard these songs, it was the intro that made me want to keep listening, which is what a good intro does.
[chuckle]Whole Lotta Love, Led Zep
[sniff]Casey Jones, Grateful Dead
Animal Song by Savage Garden. Those drums stir up emotions and the notes seem so wistful in contrast.
And for a start that just makes me happy I’d have to say The Devil Went Down to Georgia.
dpr just made me think of another one:
Men at Work - The Land Down Under
At last some folk with some taste,
Christy Moore
Dave Mathews
Led Zep
The Who
there are plenty of honorable mentions but one dishonorable is Europe-The Andrews sisters of rock!
Mine own I humbly submit
I’m a man - Chicago
Since you’ve been gone - Rainbow -Get yer air guitars out
Black Dog - Led Zep(surprised I got to that first)
Peter Gunne - Duane Eddy - its your heritage
Equinoxe(part5)-Jean Michel Jarre
Labour of Love -Hue and cry-the outro is pretty good too
Bad, bad boy - Nazareth - now this doesn’t half start off with a bang
Love lies bleeding - Elton John - almost operatic in scale
Holdin out for a hero - Bonnie Tyler -good old Jim Steinmann
Harlem Shuffle - Bob and Earl
Papa was a rollin stone - Temptations - I reckon I got me a winner here, you ain’t gonna top that
Beatles: Day Tripper and I Feel Fine
CCR: Fortunate Son and Born on the Bayou
Shangri Las: Leader of the Pack (“Is she really going out with him?”)
Ronettes: Baby I Love You (“Woh-oh, a woh-oh-oh-oh”)
White Zombie: More Human Than Human
“… that this rock thing was true. Jerry Lee Lewis was The Devil, and Jesus was an architect, previous to his career as a prophet. All of a sudden, I found myself in love with the world; so there was only one thing I could do: ding-a-ding dang my dang-a-long ling-long.”
It’s a goofy song, but I really like that intro to “Jesus Built My Hotrod” by Ministry. The ending is pretty good, too:
“Jesus built my car. It’s a love affair: namely Jesus, and my hotrod.”
Pete
Long time RGMWer and ardent AOLer
Here’s Wasted Youth, the spoken intro to Meat Loafs Everything Louder than Everything Else. It is supercool.
::cue Power Chords::
A bunch of my favorites have already been mentioned, so a few others:
The Jam: The Bitterest Pill
Bryan Ferry: Slave to Love
Van Halen: Why Can’t This Be Love
Duran Duran: A View to A Kill
Robert Palmer: Simply Irresistable
Gosh, I feel so 80’s all of a sudden…
That’s Simply Irresistible, of course.
