I like this one too!
I’m not at home, so I can’t check out my CD collection. Off the top of my head:
Cousins - Hearing the variations on Maria’s theme really brings to mind the emotions of the movie
Some Kind of Wonderful - Loved the no-name groups. “Turn to the Sky” should have been a hit.
My two favorite Soundtrack albums are
Flash Gordon and It’s a Kind of Magic (a.k.a The Highlander songs), both by Queen
and, I have to come out and admit, The Wedding Singer
Streets of Fire (Why yes, I did go to high school in the 80’s, why do you ask?)
Zabriski Point I bought it because Pink Floyd was on it, and then heard Dark Star by The Dead. The rest is hazy history…
Just some good tunes on that one…
I have never seen the movie.
Naked Lunch - it’s kinda like those ‘…with strings’ albums that Charlie Parker, Clifford Brown and others recorded, except in this case, the solo artist is Ornette Coleman and the strings are arranged/composed by Howard Shore. It’s wild and delightful.
**Rocky Horror[/]
Heavy Metal
The Muppet Movie
The Music Man
The Sting
I was 30 when this came out and I bought the soundtrack.
Natural Born Killers – Everything from Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and “A Night on Bald Mountain” to L7 and Lard, with Patsy Cline and Dr. Dre somewhere in the midst, and all mixed together by Trent Reznor. Also a perfect audio representation of the movie-- moreso than any other movie/soundtrack combination, in my opinion.
Josie and the Pussycats – Awesome songs, the Du Jour songs are hilarious, but its the actual power-pop-punk songs that bring me back, sung by Kay Hanley.
Pixel Perfect – My favourite soundtrack from a Disney Channel Original Movie (but the Princess Protection Program one has yet to be released), just a neat collection of songs.
Nashville – All the actors were forced to write their own country songs, and this is what emerged.
The Fifth Element – One of my favourites.
Invitation to a Suicide – My favourite John Zorn soundtrack, mostly for the tango-ish stuff but his typical stuff is there as well.
Any Given Sunday – 2 volumes, a nice collection of songs, heavily rap and hard rock based but finds the time for some nice bluesy and soul tracks.
The Fantasticks – the version with the original cast, with Jerry Orbach as El Gallo, Kenneth Nelson, Rita Gardner, et al.
It was the longest-running off Broadway play, and it closed in 2002 before I had a chance to go see it. I love the music, though.
Toys. Pretty much utterly forgettable movie, but the soundtrack was fantastic.
Oh, and second Josie and the Pussycats.
Blade Runner - The bootlegged “Esper Edition”. It’s pretty damn awesome.
The Boat That Rocked - 60s classics
Bed of Roses - I liked the music so much that I bought the DVD
Bride & Prejudice
South Pacific.
& if anyone knows of a CD of Camelot where everyone can sing let me know - they are great songs.
(I love that movie, and its soundtrack, but I love it for its awfulness…)
OK, that said, most of mine have been mentioned:
Across the Universe (specifically, the two-disk version)
Forest Gump
The Crow
Heavy Metal
Josie and the Pussycats
Cowboy Bebop
One that’s on both my list of favourites, and my list of most disappointing:
Watchmen. It’s a great album…but it lacks two of my favourite tracks used in the movie - 99 Luftbaloons, and First We Take Manhattan…If they were only going to use one of the Leonard Cohen tracks, at least cut the extremely overused Hallelujah! (OK, Hallelujah was used in the movie proper, First We Take Manhattan only over the credits, but that just makes the lack of putting it on the soundtrack more mindboggling to me. Why bother licencing it if only a small portion of the audience will ever hear it?)
A couple non-movie ones…video games, specifically:
The Katamari games
The World Ends With You (both albums taken as one)
Several of the Final Fantasy OSTs - X and X-2 being my favourites.
I think I say this in every soundtrack thread: Passion: Music For The Last Temptation Of Christ
My current OST fix is Triangle
Oh, yeah!
You can sit over here by me.
Dune. I listened to that soundtrack over and over. Never finished the movie.
My list wil be different from everyone else’s
The Films of Bernard Hermann – themes from The devil and Daniel Webster, The Seventh Voyahge of Sinbad, Psycho, Citizen Kane(!), Jason and the Argonauts, The Mysterious Island, North by Northwest and others*
The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad – Hermann at his best
Forbidden Planet – Louis and Bebe Barron’s pre-electronic music electronic score
Patton – Jerry Goldsmith’s music. Also includes George C. Scott’s opening speech.
1776 – because it’s underappreciated.
