Greatest athlete who retired at the top of his game?

You’ve never worked with the Lions Manangement, huh.

Ricky Henderson was so close… :stuck_out_tongue:

You know, that’s actually an interesting point. Rickey Henderson really IS one of the better players in baseball history and, depending on if you count returns as publicity stunts, he retired at the top of his game.

He won’t. He’s just angling for more money. Same for his recent tantrum over racism.

I was going to say Gene Tunney, who retired after the Heeney bout. He earned $990,000 in his last bout, walked away, and never looked back.

He was willing to fight Dempsey again, but Dempsey turned it down - he had taken such a beating from Tunney in the first two fights that a doctor warned him that he risked blindness if he fought again.

Shodan

I came in to say Armstrong and Sanders. Glad to say they’ve been touched upon.

Barry Sanders may have put up good numbers up to the end, but he had zero leadership. He played for Barry Sanders. Period. Add to that the graceless way he retired and you can say he retired at the top of his game only if part of his game is being a self centered little jerk.
