So I happened upon this list of [30 Most Iconic Sports Photographs of all Time](http://www.buzzfeed.com/jpmoore/30-of-the-most-moving-sports-photographs-of-all-ti) and I think it is woefully bad.

For one thing it is missing this photo of [Secretariat at Belmont](http://www.secretariat.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/Belmont_-Stakes_-31-lengths_photo1.jpg)

another is that the photo of Derek Redmond certainly is from a dramatic moment, the photo itself is not, IMO.

He also has teh wrong photo for 19080 Men’s Hockey. It should be [this one](http://www.usahockey.com/uploadedImages/USAHockey/Menu_Team_USA/Menu_Miracle_on_Ice/1980campcov.jpg).

For me the most iconic sports photo of all time is the one he has at number four, Ali, screaming over Sonny Liston. Bobby Orr would be second.

I’m impressed by how well represented Boston is in the list.

My first two thoughts were of Orr and Fisk, but the Ali-Liston shot is pretty much the tops.

I can’t view it, but if Maradona against 6 Belgians from the (I think) 1986 World Cup isn’t there, it’s a bad list. Here’s a [link](http://thepanenka.files.wordpress.com/2010/11/article-0-000ecdf100000258-796_468x534.jpg) if anyone doesn’t know of it.

It is woefully bad - way too much sentimental American bollox. Curt Schillings bloody sock FFS. Although to be fair it is crowned with some sentimental UK bollox which I agree is just not a great photo, period. Don’t think I’ve ever even seen it before in fact.

A superb and iconic photo from football is the one of Bill Shankly talking to Jock Stein in a back corridor of Anfield. I’ve never seen a high resolution one on the net, but you can see a small one [here](http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?um=1&hl=en&client=firefox-a&sa=N&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&biw=1467&bih=673&tbm=isch&tbnid=3kezgv9un90MdM:&imgrefurl=http://www.amazon.co.uk/Liverpools-Shankly-Celtics-Framed-Memorabilia/dp/B001P7QLQE&docid=N3xlF8L1H4eOGM&imgurl=http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41wCqElp43L._SL500_AA300_.jpg&w=300&h=300&ei=cjMkUNGHIc7a4QSHy4HQCQ&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=386&sig=102381041047879168103&page=1&tbnh=152&tbnw=152&start=0&ndsp=20&ved=1t:429,r:3,s:0,i:82&tx=88&ty=58)

It should be " The Greatest Sports stories". As standalone photos, most are pretty poor. Only a few tell the story without a word. The Ali photo is a great example.

Pretty bad. Many of them are iconic to the USA only.

The black power salute, Ali over Liston, Jesse Owens and Maradona I’d include in a world list. I’m open to offers on others that have real world-wide appeal.

[this one](http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?hl=en&sa=X&biw=1280&bih=685&tbm=isch&prmd=imvns&tbnid=6m86O7jMNXpc4M:&imgrefurl=http://www.vertustech.com/blog/%3Fp%3D37&docid=GtJ1_iHZGSRW0M&imgurl=http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3082/2586655075_f20506abfe.jpg&w=326&h=500&ei=9TkkUNbiL6Tj4QTV6YHADg&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=374&vpy=19&dur=9982&hovh=278&hovw=181&tx=80&ty=167&sig=113169888399949679198&page=4&tbnh=152&tbnw=99&start=60&ndsp=27&ved=1t:429,r:1,s:60,i:271) has a decent claim.

I guess it’s naturally US-centric, but 28 out of 30 seems a bit much. Still, it’s one person’s opinion, and he’s entitled to his selections.

In the cricket-playing nations the first ever tied test (and as yet there have still only been two) produced [this iconic image](http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Cricket/Day/match_text_blocks/2010/12/7/1291738888914/joe-solomon-006.jpg). Too many baseball shots and not one showing my favorite: the outfielder who got doused by a glass of soda/water by a fan above him while reaching to make the catch.
My favorite boxing shot is still marciano delivering onto walcott.
A bicycle kick by Pele would have tied with Maradona’s 6:1.

That was the first thing I thought of, too. I remember an interview with the photographer and he mentioned how you can see other photographers on the far side of the ring. All they got was a picture of Ali’s back. It takes a fair amount of luck to be in the right place at the right time.

…another cricket one that I thought of was the shot of Chappell underarm bowling: but on googling the image I was thinking of was just a [screengrab](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:1981Underarm.jpg)! To that end, here’s a famous one of [Fran Cotton](http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://misterdavid.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341f4baf53ef01630108e262970d-800wi&imgrefurl=http://misterdavid.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8341f4baf53ef01630108e262970d-popup&h=401&w=468&sz=55&tbnid=fvQvNxOeEL1T4M:&tbnh=90&tbnw=105&zoom=1&usg=__8QMUubv9DshPRF3YUy84RxZDyvs=&docid=7jG8Q3uv7gjG1M&sa=X&ei=--YkUMqfE8Xg4QTMzoDQCg&ved=0CFAQ9QEwAA&dur=707) circa 1979.

At the risk of a hijack, one of the iconic rugby moments that should have been captured on film was this…

> [@](#):
>
> _Willie John McBride confessed to trashing a few hotel rooms around New Zealand in 1971, but the South African expedition three years later was the most notorious. In Port Elizabeth the sound of splintering furniture, exploding fire extinguishers and the lapping of water in the lobby brought an apoplectic hotel manager to the room of the Lions’ captain. “Mr McBride,” the manager screamed, “your players are wrecking my hotel.” The great man sat cross-legged on his bed in his underpants, puffing on his pipe. “Are there many dead?” he enquired. “I’ve called the police,” the manager replied. “And tell me, these police of yours,” McBride said. “Will there be many of them?”_

The article it comes from is [here](http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/rugby/rugby-union/about-these-police--will-there-be-many-of-them-6145189.html).

One thing that strikes me about most of these photos is how few of them actually show sports action - I mean, if you think of Michael Jordan, do you think of him hugging Scottie Pippen or do you think of something like [this](http://www.google.com/imgres?num=10&hl=en&safe=off&biw=1120&bih=598&tbm=isch&tbnid=YZXHK2O8nABYAM:&imgrefurl=http://www.yougotdunkedon.com/2009/09/michael-jordan-dunk-mix.html&docid=FBoTm9D0uXxvCM&imgurl=http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_42w5-R0zz2g/Sq27gFORN5I/AAAAAAAAIwA/ycii3GTaBOo/s400/Michael%252BJordan%252BDunk%252BMix.jpg&w=400&h=295&ei=5QIlUO6wI8HfqgHZj4HYCQ&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=100&vpy=174&dur=1235&hovh=193&hovw=262&tx=165&ty=82&sig=117934468064565304187&page=1&tbnh=110&tbnw=142&start=0&ndsp=24&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0,i:139)?

Yeah, that list stinks. Several of these are more suited to clips (JT Snow with the bat boy, Miracle on Ice and Buckner) and can’t be fully captured with a still shot. Also how the hell does Mark Cuban taking a wizz while holding the NBA trophy even come close to being included?

I agree with the others, as my first thought was Ali standing over Liston which was rightfully included.
Willie Mays and the Black Panther salute are also good ones.

One not on the list is Jordan sinking the game winner against the Jazz.

[here](http://blog.gettyimages.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Michael-Jordan-1998-game-winning-shot-Fernando-Medina-NBAE-Getty-Images-56382473-e1339524361424.jpg)

I’ve kept the Sports Illustrated fold out shot which shows remarkable clarity. The thing about it, which you can’t really see off a computer monitor, is the look of anguish on most of the crowd. In that the moment that the ball is in the air, you can see most of the Utah crowd bracing themselves in anticipated horror and thinking, “Damn. The one thing we didn’t want to happen –Jordan taking an uncontested shot at the buzzer- just happened. And we all know what’s coming next.”

That was exactly the picture I thought would be on the list for Michael Jordan. The one they ended up using? Not so much. THIS picture of Jordan you’ve posted here is as iconic an NBA image you will ever see…His Airness taking off from the free throw line en route to a thundering dunk. Damn, now I miss that era of the NBA. Its almost unwatchable to me now.
