Yeah, that did not at all appear to be the case in the mid/late '90s: I was dating a few different twentysomething women (in Seattle, NYC, Minneapolis) in that time frame and did not come across it at all, except for one girl who also had lots of piercings (including nipple rings), tats, and a mohawk.
