See, this is why I like to regard being punk (or metal, or goth, or whatever your musical subculture is) as a continuum. Avril’s not punk, Rancid is, and Green Day falls somewhere in the middle.

I missed this the first time around, but I have to ditto this. Vtynos, I really dug your post and you’re a smart guy.

I think a lot of what people think about punk comes from the hardcore community. They were the ones who really started making their own labels and trying to be really authentic.
Then again, the ideals have also been around for awhile. One of the original members of the Velvet Underground quit before their first gig because he thought getting paid was selling out.
