Because of the greenhouse effect, the decline in oil reserves, and the fact that our dependence on oil makes us dependent on the favor of countries where we are unpopular we need to be developing environmentally benign sources of energy. Because the initial cost of research in this area discourages private investors the government needs to to the initial financial heavy lifting.
Mistakes will be made. Money will be wasted. Nevertheless, the effort needs to be made.
