Rot Lop Fan! Or Mogo! Or what’s-his-name, the dead one whose ring won’t allow him to rest (creepy as hell, a zombie Lantern). But Earth’s only true Green Lantern is Alan Scott, who began his career without obligation to a foreign power. ---

Gotta go with Hal, I started reading comics in 1963, I never even heard of Alan until the JLA-JSA crossovers started. Any ‘new’ Lanterns since are still ‘the new guy’ to me. “Mogo don’t socialize”. 🙂 ---

Alan Scott is the only Green Lantern as far as I am concerned. All those other guys are the equivalent of a cheap, Chinese-made knockoff purchased at Dollar Tree. Probably labeled as “Green ActionLight Hero Man.” ---

Alan Scott was the first Green Lantern I really learned about, from a huge book about Golden Age superheroes I got from the library. I always thought he was the coolest. Once I found out about the Green Lantern Corps., I could never get into them just because I _hated_ the Guardians. I could never get behind a hero who took orders from a bunch of self-proclaimed fascists, who usually acted like jerks to boot. ---

John Stewart. I was a Marvel kid, so my primary source is the (awesome) JLA cartoon. The decision to go with him instead of one of the more prominent ones caused some complaining at the time, but I think it was probably the right one. Hal would have been too much like Superman, and Kyle would have been too much like Flash. Plus, the team benefited from an ‘old soldier’ guy. As far as I know, he’s also the only GL who ever scored Hawkgirl. That counts for something right there. – Next question: Who’s the ‘real’ Ryan Reynolds, Green Lantern or Deadpool? ---

But 20 years of deliberately turning herself into the avatar of whiny, entitled, post-breakup femininity has lessened that somewhat. Douchy moves like buying up the rights to a silly but beloved early 80’s TV show because it showed her as a (gasp) _pretty and happy teenager!_ lessened it more. Also, Dave Coulier. Scarlett Johansson is beautiful and a pretty good actress. And . . . ? I mean, that’s awesome in real life, but a little lacking if you’re going up against a superheroine. And no, she is NOT the Black Widow. Well, OK. She might be the current, arm-candy-to-a-Gary-Stu incarnation of the Black Widow, but that’s nothing to boast of. The real Black Widow seems to have vanished with Fabian Nicieza’s departure from Marvel. And that’s a damned shame. Blake Lively. Gossip Girl. (Which, admittedly, does sound like a fourth-string DC superheroine) Clearly a lesser version of Scarlett. Up against Hawkgirl. A superheroine. An amazonian (used as a an adjective, not a nationality) superheroine. With a sardonic, snarky sense of humor. And red hair. AND WINGS. **To reiterate: An amazoinian, red haired superheroine with a good sense of humor AND WINGS.** That’s just not equivalent, even if you stack Alanis, Scarlett, and Blake on top of each other. Which we know didn’t happen, because Alanis would have written a song bitching about it.
