This tragic year claims another one: only nine months after Keith Emerson’s untimely death, we have lost Greg Lake as well. Early ELP was a huge influence on my own musical development; this is a really hard loss. Rest in peace, Greg. ---

Lake wrote little masterpieces for ELP: “From the Beginning,” “Lucky Man.” He balanced out Emerson, who too often went over the top and then took off from there. A group based solely on Emerson would have been unbearable. ELP was equals in a rare sense. But this forcefully rams home the ultimate question: how the hell are Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young all still alive? ---
