I’m sitting here, dopin’ and eatin’ a big ol’ bowl of grits. I added lots of butter, lots of salt and pepper, some crumbled bacon, cheese, and about a table spoon of used chicken grease. MMMMMMM. I’m gonna sleep good tonight.

(Hey, it’s definately a mundane and pointless thought!)

although i was born and raised in berkeley, CA, my mom is from Richmond, VA, and brought many southern customs to our home. along with my supposed hint of a southern accent that my exgf can’t stop carping about, a love for grits is a Southern value she imparted to me. the condiments you describe sound heavenly. particularly the chicken grease. bacon grease worked the best for me.

btw, familiar with the Pharcyde song entitled “grits”? adds a whole new dimension to the thread. as if sexual innuendo is a new idea to this board.

I am a native of Glendale, CA, and even though my mom is from South Dakota (where apparently they eat MANY weird things) she could never get us kids to eat grits.

Grits are weird. What is that stuff - paste? Does it taste like paste? I would think so.

Think of grits as Southern tofu.
By themselves there’s not much taste. But what gets mucked in (or accidently drops in)can make a big difference.

Mmmmm!

I love grits! Butter and salt are all I need.

Grits remind me of Mommy.

I’m with Sue on this… butter & salt are all that are really necessary. But, then again, they sure are good with bacon.

They remind me of my Grandfather, who grew up in Georgia, and insisted on grits for breakfast nearly every morning.

Mmmmm…grits. And I haven’t had my breakfast yet. I eat them with butter and salt, like **Sue and Java** , sometimes with a little bit of fried egg yolk on the top. Instant grits suck, those always taste of nothing. You need to get real grits…they have a nice corn flavor to them.

Of course, I’m in Germany, so real grits are hard to come by. ☹ Pity me.

I gotta tell ya, for a fairly new Southern resident like myself, dem grits is tasty. Back north, I used to eat Farina occassionally, which sort of remind me of grits. I think I like grits better, with butter and _sugar_.
Yum. And mix in some of that, uh, what do these Southerners call it? Red eye gravy? Double yum.

Here in Tallahassee (deep in the southland) grits are usually eaten with butter, salt, and a dash of pepper – unless one’s having fish in which case we eat cheese grits.

The absolute best use for “regular” grits is to eat them with (literally) fried eggs. Yummmm…

I’m hungry – where’s the kitchen???

My favorite “eat breakfast quick and then run catch the bus” breakfast when I was a kid was cheese toast and grits.

I’d eat 'em by lifting the toast, smearing a forkful of grits on the leading edge, and taking a big bite. Yum!

I second that. I like my grits with butter, salt and pepper, sometimes cheese. Served with fried eggs, cat head biscuits and sauage gravy. Ooh my tongue just got a hard-on thinking of it.
Would was it that said–Grits ain’t Cream of Wheat

Alabama-born-and-raised checking in here. Grits are a pox on the palate of humankind.

People who like grits invariably say “You have to prepare them such-and-such way,” including ingredients like crumbled bacon, cheese, butter, salt, pepper, motor oil, haggis, monkey excretions, etc. They do this because grits have NO taste on their own. If I want to taste crumbled bacon, cheese, butter, salt, pepper, etc., I’ll just eat that, thank you. I don’t need some watery cardboard medium to transport them to my mouth.

Grits. Feh.

And don’t even get me started on tomatoes.

I like grits, don’t know what the hell is in em but I eats em and I’m from Maryland. Every time I eat breakfast in the South they ask me if I want grits and when I say yes they look at me all funny. must be that Northern accent I’ve got.

…alright now , here is the deal . you cannot get that bleached overproccesed crap that , say , the fine folks at quaker oats scrape into a box and call “grits " and say you know grits… before you can render an informed opinion you need to experience the real deal, that is to say WHOLE KERNAL AND STONE GROUND WITH A WATER POWERED WHEEL sometimes labled as " speckled grits” as the remaining part of the germ looks like a little black speck. These have a GREAT texture and a rich flavor, served with a few eggs over, about a half lb. of thick bacon, some toast …oooooh get some butter, gravy, …+drool+
uh,
… gotta go!

My mom is from Georgia and her mom still lives in Alabama so I’ve been eating grits since i was a little kid. My grandma makes the _best_ grits too. She’s coming to visit in a few weeks and I can’t wait to go over there for breakfast!! Grits, fried eggs, bacon, and toast. I put lots of butter and salt on my grits and then I throw the fried eggs into the grits and mix it all together, slop it on my toast by the forkfull and eat it! Soooo yummy. I’m starting to get really hungry now… and there’s not a grit in sight. Dammit!

Putting sugar on grits is blaspehmy!

Butter, salt, and some ground hot pepper = ambrosia!
