I grew up and still live in the Midwest. On a vacation to Tampa last summer, I jokingly asked the waitress in the worst southern accent I could muster, “Ya’ll got grits?” Well they did. I tried them. Tasted like plain white rice with the consistency of oatmeal, even with butter and salt. Blah.

I’m not gonna knock people who love them. They probably would have been better with cheese, bacon, various deadly greases, but the point raised by Sauron comes up: Why bother with the grits at all if they’re not contributing much? They weren’t bad, I just didn’t think they were anything special either.

Love them myself. With breakfast eggs and toast. With dinner fork some meatloaf, dunk em in grits and gravy.

My old college buddy spent 3 years in Botswana. The staple food was grain sorghum and water. I think many poor countries have variations of crushed grain and water dishes.

Grits are cheap. They are po folks food.
