We are moving next week. Not far, just a couple miles and we are moving some of the more fragile items ourselves. So yesterday we spent a good deal of the day with the doors open (to the house, to garage, from the garage to the house). At some point my said, “I just saw a giant rat.” Eventually I saw it too, in the living room behind the sofa. We didn’t know what to do. Finally my wife thought to call public security who sent two men out. They spent an hour or more here. When they saw it they called it a marmotte (French for groundhog). By this time, it had hidden under a radiator. They had some kind of lasso on a stick and they poked and prodded it for nearly an hour and eventually got the lasso around its middle and carried it outside where it thankfully scampered off. Phew! Never a dull moment. We did some more moving today, but were careful to keep the door closed.

The worst part is that tomorrow he’ll be back, and you’ll have to do the whole thing all over again.

What I want to know is, why does this animal have so many names? Groundhog, woodchuck, groundpig, whistlepig, whistler, thickwood badger, Canada marmot, monax, moonack, weenusk, red monk… Anyone with that many names is up to no good.
