> I just wish they’d kept some of the track-racing elements from Vice City and San Andreas. Then again, it wouldn’t have fit with the grittier storyline and more mature tone of GTA IV. Here’s hopeing GTA V gets juvenile again.

It will. It’ll be called Saints Row 3.

I guess I should pick up Saints Row - I’ve never played any SR games, but maybe it’s time I bifurcate my sandbox-gaming interests into those with more mature, realistic plotlines and gameplay elements (what GTA seems to have become) and those that let you go friggin’ nuts with the weaponry and vehicular mayhem.

You should. You can pick up a combo pack of SR1 and SR2 for $20. I’ve been playing through them for the past month, and they’re a lot of fun.

I tried SR2 - I really wanted to like it but the controls just felt so primitive.

I think that site might be reaching a bit. However, since they also spelled out “five” in the logo, maybe it’s a hint that the V is not necessarily just the version number, but rather a hint at the location. As in V “Las **V** enturas”.

Maybe a Vegas in the 50s/60s, with mobsters, cool old casinos, and Sinatra/Elvis proxies. Now that would be freakin’ awesome. It would be a chance to completely redesign Las Venturas, and could bring in some interesting gameplay elements like building a casino empire, dating showgirls, etc, that GTA: SA missed out on.

And you wouldn’t have to carry around a goddamn cellphone everywhere you go.

They’re not primitive, they’re powerful. You have a lot of controls and a lot of tricks. Hard to get used to, but powerful.

To give you one example - the accelerator on the cards is one of the buttons, not a trigger (unlike every other driving game I’ve tried). So you can only fully accelerate, or coast - there is no way to maintain an even speed - its a constant on-off-on-off-on-off. It’s a lot of little things like that. I do like that the fighting is more involved and complicated.

I’d actually like to see GTA take a page from a game like Assassins Creed for the on-foot element. I’d love to be able to do a little bit of Parkour in a GTA city - I’ve fiddled around with it on my own, figuring out which rooftops I can access, and how far along the blocks you can go via jumping and climbing…

> I hear that. I stopped playing GTA4 fast on account of the miserable setting and the the DIAS gameplay.

Holy shit yes. I know _to the minute_ when I stopped playing: 01-29-2010, 03:33 AM. Why? Too hard? Too intense?

Too. Fucking. Boring.

DIAS

I know the time because I’d started a [thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=549707)here about whether or not there were cheat codes or _anything_ to make the pre-action portions of the missions go by quicker. Nope. So when I timed the go-pick-up-whoever-then-drive-some-more-only-to-watch-him-die-two-seconds-later and saw that there were _seven fucking minutes_ between failing a mission and restarting it at the action part (and not seven minutes of a cut scene, seven minutes where you had to fucking pay attention and chauffeur some asshole), I threw it off my HDD in disgust.

Fuck me, it was a great game that wore me down with boredom. If GTV doesn’t have save-on-demand or some method of cutting out all that bullshit I’m going to stay as far away from it as possible.

What’s that? Sorry, I have to leave this thread now: my annoying cousin keeps fucking calling me and begging me to take him bowling.

Ah. How do I put it? Well, it’s supposed to be insane. Powerful, yes, but hilarious all the same. Everything in the game is designed to cause trouble, including fantastically stupid car crashes, pointless violence, and mad destruction by accident. It’s a feature, not a bug. To me, anyway. And I was sill quite capable of driving cars around quite well - it’s just that if you’re not causing damage, you’re doing it wrong.

I kinda like your ideas, though.

I wish you could use GTA save files on PS3. All I want to do some times is just cruise the city. Don’t feel like going through the 12 hours of game play required.

You inspired me to order the combo pack from Amazon today. I appreciated the detail of GTA IV, but re-playing Vice City has made me realize that the series has sacrificed some of its fun element in exchanging cartoonishness for realism.

Oh, oops. You’re right. Still, I think it’d be cool if it got a full-city treatment like in GTA IV.

Yay! I’m inspiring!

One piece of advice, feel free to ignore:

In SR1, once you get comfortable in the game, check out a faq site, get the map of all the gang tag painting spots, and grind through them. The reward is unlimited running, which is very, very useful. SR2 tied that reward to a task that was easier & a lot quicker, which is nice.

If you’re playing GTA IV, you can do this by going into multiplayer free mode; if you don’t want to deal with random players dropping in you can make it a private game or go into party mode. Then you’ll have access to the full map, although not all hte buildings that can be entered in SP can be entered in MP.

Which can be fun in itself - it’s not impossible to get to the other boroughs, but your wanted level goes to max the instant you step foot in a place you haven’t unlocked, and then you’re getting chased by SWAT teams until you die…!

But it’s obnoxious and utterly pointless, merely an abritrary and needless design decision. There’s no reason to block off those areas. It’s not like Saints’ Row was made somehow horrible by the fact that you can go anywhere the minute you finish the intro. In fact, I can’t think of any open-world game at all which still tries that nonsense.
