Congratulations! Should anyone start the following conversations over a holiday meal, you have my blessing to throw food. Hard. 1. “Have you thought about names? Oh, you can’t use that name, he’s not dead yet! Oh, you can’t use that name; Becky-Sue called it first & she’s dating now…” 2. “Have you thought about schools? Because, while this is a nice house, the schools in your town just Suck.” 3. “Do you have his/her name on a pre-K list yet? All the Best schools are booked years in advance. Didn’t you Know…?” 4. “Don’t worry about clothes! We have pre-puked-on hand me downs that have survived 10 Hellions who like liver spinach and ketchup sandwichs. They’re clean; I’ve washed them in pure Lysol, so you can hardly smell the puke.” 5. “Wonderful! We have a dozen [del]broken toys the town won’t take[/del] Playschool yard toys you can have! We’ll drop them off tomorrow…” 6. “When I was pregnant, I couldn’t stand the smell of kaopectate. Have you checked if you can yet?” 7. “Nine months Pregnant in June? What were you Thinking?” 8. “July isn’t very far off; when are you going to get around to fixing up this house?” 9. “Isn’t it horrible to have to go pee? When I was pregnant I Always had to go pee. It was just pee… pee… pee… pee…! All you had to do was mention the word pee and I had to go… Honey, where are you running off to?” 10. “I’ve called Father Flannigan and he said he’ll be Overjoyed to preside at the Christening…” _ **rrriiiiiiiiing!** _ “You!!! Are a Blabber-Mouth! A BLABBER-MOOOOOUTH!!!” ---

I’ve actually been pretty lucky - most of the family has held back so far and just expressed excitement for us. I’ve gotten a whole bunch of “Oh boy, get ready for a crazy few years,” but that’s to be expected. I think the gory birth stories come later, when I’m huge and starting to worry how this kid is going to get out. When I told my dad, he went off on a one-hour journey through my infancy, reminiscing about how cute I was and how much work I was. It was pretty adorable. This will be the first grandkid for my side, so my parents are ecstatic. Mom insisted I get a webcam so she can get a weekly look at how big I’m getting. Photos are apparently not acceptable. Since we’d been trying a while, a small handful of friends with toddlers have been hanging onto swings and strollers and clothes to give us when we’re ready, and I’m very grateful. Considering how expensive child care is in this area, I’ll take used stuff wherever I can get it! I’m looking forward to the spring yard sales. 🙂 ---

Great news! You hear how much having kids changes your life, but until you’re actually a parent, you really don’t realize just how much. Your everyday thoughts, the deeper levels of love you experience, the way you see the world, your priorities…etc…EVERYTHING CHANGES!!! Enjoy your new life as parents! ---

I know you are going to be a Great Mom. I just wanted to give you a heads up that, even as a guy, I’ve heard people tell the radiant & expectant the most “what were you thinking?” things. Seriously, my best advice is to stay away from books, message boards, and the night nurses at the hospital. Do what seems best to you and everyone else can go hang. ---

Congrats! You are about to go on one heck of an adventure! Contrary to the advice above, I found the baby boards (specifically, the birth month boards), to be a lifesaver, especially in the first few weeks after birth. There are a lot of tough parts to get through, and it’s helpful to know that you are not alone. ---
