I heard a little about this on the tube this morning; [http://www.sciencenews.org/20010728/fob9.asp](http://www.sciencenews.org/20010728/fob9.asp) Pretty interesting. They say that dogs _do_ laugh. And that this laughter invites play from other pooches. 🙂 You get no arguement from me. I love this stuff. But the real test is; Will the SDMBr’s buy it? Peace, mangeorge ---

And what about cats? Elephants? Hyenas? Parrots? Why are we spending so much of our tax money on dogs? ---

Yeah, who speaks (…er, laughs…?) for the cats? I always suspected that my cat could laugh, and after reading this, I want to know for sure. Just think, once they find out what makes cats laugh, you’ve got one helluva niche entertainment market just begging to be exploited! ---

It says in the article that rats laugh. Spend a little while with mine and you’ll find out they have a sense of humor! ---

I don’t think they laugh. Reading the article, I think, specifically, they giggle. What I mean is there are a lot of different kinds of laughter and reasons humans laugh. A lot of human laughter is a positive reaction to the pain and absurdity of life. I don’t think dogs laugh like that. It sound more like giggling- I’m thinking of children running through sprinklers giggling with delight. That kind of laughter. Cats? My cats make this trilling, chirping noise when they’re really delighted with something. It could be like laughter. That’s as much as I can say without a government grant. ---

You realize of course, that I came to this thread expecting Greyhound humor. I was cruelly deceived. Of course they laugh! But only if you tell good jokes. If you tell a really good one they belly-laugh and puke all over the new carpet. Trust me, I know. -Jonathan “Greyhound Rescuer” Chance ---
