Ok, so maybe having a community of friends solely online isn’t exactly “normal”, _per se_, but for people who have a hard time relating to others IRL, for whatever reasons, the internet can be a godsend. Who are YOU to judge whether it’s in their best interest or not? If, for some, the SDMB is their circle of friends/support group/whatever and they are happier than they would be without the 'net, then So. Fucking. What? ---

Look, there are hundreds if not thousands of internet support groups for depression, OCD, what have you. There are websites solely devoted to fostering mutual encouragement and so on, and I think that’s fantastic. I really do, and I fully agree with you that those sites can be a godsend. I would think it obscene for someone to go on there and start arguing with people. But this site isn’t one of those places. It is a public forum where (virtually) everyone’s input is allowed. When a poster chooses to go into a public forum and discuss issue X – whether issue X is **Espirix** ’s sex life, **Lieu** ’s bathroom life, or **Guin** ’s social life – they can’t turn around and say it’s nobody’s business. As the recent thread about **Ahunter3** indicates, some people want to have it both ways: they want to bring up their personal stuff in a public place and then silence anyone who has an opinion they don’t care to hear. Sorry, but I think that’s a horrible idea for _everyone_. ---

I’m not sure I can agree with you, once someone puts out personnel info on a message board, I think polite questions should be expected. I would say Klaatu pitting is different as it is over the top and would meet your category of inappropriate. I don’t really know Guin, but if she enjoys posting here and elsewhere, why is that Klaatu’s concern. Butting in where she is already talking about issues and whatever with advise should be okay. Strange that she tried to pit Ahunter3 recently though. I think she learned from it at least. Jim ---
