The Who. My Generation*. He’d even have a chance of being able to play it Pinball Wizard and various CSI theme tunes.
The Beatles. Dizzy Miss Lizzy, one (easy) lick - proper Rock and Roll music (see also their cover of Chuck Berry’s Rock and Roll Music though it’s the vocal that makes that one).
Zeppelin. No mention yet of Stairway? Every guitar player has to know this** For inspirational guitar I’d vote for Rock and Roll, Black Dog and Heartbreaker.
Pink Floyd. Money, Time and Comfortably Numb. If just for the guitar solos.
Would any System of a Down be appropriate?
*The current (rather depleted) version of The Who played this on last week’s Later with Jools Holland. They’ve still got it people.
**Though they also know to never, ever, play it in public.
I’d throw in Rush, 2112 overture because it’s really easy to play (except the solo, but that’s always true) and sounds fairly impressive for a beginner. Just bang out a buncha power chords while playing along with the album.
The best guitarist that I have ever seen in concert I saw a little club in Chicago called Mama Rosa’s. The guitarists name is Melvin Taylor and he plays there regularly. He may not be super famous, but as far as I can tell, he is every bit as good as any mentioned here.
I always whip out Dragonforce in these discussions, because Herman Li and Sam Totman are just absolutely jaw droppingly fast and innovative. The rest of the band sounds like 80’s euro metal sped up as fast as it can. Nothing really offensive for kiddies out there.
Wordman you either show your age, or you are on the computer too much!
Good choices though. For first time guitar players, I reccomend an electric, not an acoustic.
It is easier to hold the strings, and to practice streching the hands. Less frustration.
I’ll give you one: Chris Pennick-
Sunday, in my car, I heard the tail end of something about an old school acoustic guitar god who had died. I just barely heard that much, so I’m wondering if any of the posters here know of any recent deaths?
Peace,
