Guitar Hero (PS2): OMG

Ah! Thanks for pointing that out. I forgot to mention the comic! Silly me.

I’d also like to point out that I’ve just cleared hard mode and that I have only 3 songs left in expert mode. Shouldn’t be long before I finish the first phase!

Ok, I must add a warning. This game can be hard on your left wrist so be careful not to overdo yourself. I’ve actually hurt mine from playing too much, I just couldn’t help it. I recommend you alternate with someone while playing, I found this gives the best results.

I’ve just finished Medium mode with 5 stars in all the (licensed) songs. Cowboys from Hell was really hard to pass but I finally made it!

(This game still rocks hard. Go buy it)

I have MASTERED Medium mode. I’ve got 5 stars in each and every song. I’ve started on Hard mode but it’s going to be a while before I master THAT one. Expert still is very far over my horizon of accomplishments

Buy the game! It rocks!

I played this game a few weeks ago at a party and loved it. So much so the wife got it for me for Christmas.

This has to be one of the coolest games ever. I’ve gotten through almost all of the medium songs, I think I still have 5 to go, maybe less. I tried Bark at the Moon though and couldn’t get very far, what a pain in the ass.

I’ve gotten through the easy level with 4-5 stars on all songs, a couple I only missed 1-2 notes, that sucks to get most of the way through a song and miss that one note near the end. I’m having a problem with the hammer-ons and pull offs, but they seem strange to me. Plus sometimes I can’t get my fingers out of the way to do the chords after a single note. But still a whole lot of fun to play.

I just hope I can get through a lot more before the baby comes. Lets see, change the baby or get through this song?

Sorry to be so incredibly late to the game here (pun intended), but Guitar Hero is incredible!

A friend introduced my wife and me to it a couple of weeks ago, and we were instantly hooked. Probably more amused than enthralled at the time, but interested nonetheless.

So yesterday, after we’d gotten back from Las Vegas and both of us had a little cash in our pocket, we sort of half-jokingly talked about getting the game. And once we both realized we were willing, we went into hot pursuit mode. It was well worth the $70! We’re only on the Easy mode right now, but boy is this game fun!

I have to say that I have no musical talent whatsoever beyond a few drum lessons, and I’ve never in my life had any desire to learn the guitar. But I’m still finding this incredibly addictive. And as others have pointed out, the covers done on the game are very, VERY well done. In some ways, that makes the game.

So, for those of you who haven’t bought the game, go buy it. Seriously. Our friend, who previously was exclusively a computer gamer, bought the PS2 solely because he wanted to play this game.

Question for those of you who have long ago finished the game on all levels – what’s the replay value like? Do you ever pick it up again just to nail a couple of songs?

Once you’ve bought all the bonus songs (available in any difficulty other than easy), you can jam around with them in the free play mode. Of course, when you play at higher levels the difficulty ramps waaaay up. It’s a hell of a party game - too bad a second guitar costs $40.

My personal favorite is “Cheat on the Church.”

And oh! A sequel is coming! RAWK!

Sweet, 55 more songs.

Though I’m still stuck on Cowboys from Hell on Hard. I’ve gotten through 17 songs on Expert, but can’t get through the last two of Hard.

I was stuck in that exact spot for weeks. Keep working on it, you’ll get there eventually. I’m still not finished either - I have one or two songs left on expert mode to nail. It may never happen; they’re hard as hell.

I cleared expert a few days ago at last. It was very satisfying.

I can’t wait for guitar hero 2. I’m buying it on launch day for certain.

I urge all of you who have not yet tried the game to take a chance on it.

I liked playing the bonus track “All of This” (by Shaimus) so much my SO bought me their CD. Woot!

I really wish this was available on XBOX!

I’ve been borrowing my son’s PS2.

What an awesome game. I just now started the HARD level. It’s already killing my. My pinky won’t move like that!

Just got back from E3 over the weekend. I hated this damn game. Just from the way it was presented in their booth.

They had a stage set up and would have people decked out in sort of generic ‘rocker’ outfits periodically get on stage to demonstrate. Then others would show up and cheer and dance and yell ‘Freebird’ and such.

I wanted to rush the stage with a strat and beat them to death while yelling ‘LEARN. TO. REALLY. PLAY!!!’ in my best Shatner voice.

As Doug Lowenstein (top dog at the ESA which throws E3) says ‘Playing Splinter Cell won’t make you an operative. Playing Madden won’t make you an NFL player.’ And this won’t make you a guitarist. Urgh!

I’m clearly getting to old for E3. But packaging fantasy like that just drives me bats.

Well, welcome to the thread captain bringdown. :stuck_out_tongue: Did you actually play the game? There are lots of people who actually play real life guitars (like me) who love it.

And was it the first Guitar Hero you saw or the second? The new one is coming out around Christmas this year I think, and it looks SWEET! :headbangingsmiley:

So, are the notes you play on the guitar controller the same as the real notes?

In other words, once I learned to play all these songs for the game, would I then be able to pick up my Stratocaster and play the same songs?

Nope, nothing like that. If the GH controller were a real instrument, the best song you could shred would be Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

It might help a little if you’re not good at hammer-ons and pull-offs though.

The game is basically like learning a new instrument. You start off slow, but as you progress you get better and better to the point that you can end up successfully completing some of the harder songs the first time through. You learn to sight read the music on the screen for the “instrument” in your hand. It’s a lot of fun, and it’s amazing what you can play when you get good.

The same publisher also made two similar games called Frequency and Amplitude, where you used the PS2 controller to play the notes on the screen. Like in Guitar Hero, you get better with practice and can really play some mind-boggling stuff toward the end of the game.

And there are people who actually play real life guitars (like myself) who think it’s horrific.

Yes, I’ve played it. Both there and prior (it’s part of what I do, after all). I acknowledge that people enjoy it. But surrounding it with everything but cocksucking groupies gives me the willies.

They did have 3 mini-concerts (one every day of the show) featuring real guitarists with real skill playing some indie songs.

Did you get to play the game at all?

Dude, that’s the game industry in a nutshell. Pre-packaged fantasy is at the heart of what we do. We make people FEEL like they’re race car drivers, fighter pilots, star quarterbacks, pop stars, special forces soldiers, whatever. Being any one of these things in real life requires natural talent, years of hard work, and a fair amount of luck. We give people a TASTE of that mastery with a few hours of practice in their living room.

Guitar Hero makes you totally FEEL like a rock star, even if you can’t play a lick. Now that’s a great game.

Wow. You are a real 1337 stick in the mud.

What does a persons ability to play a real guitar have to do with their ability to enjoy a guitar game? I’ve been playing for a LONG time. Almost exclusively metal actually. Alot of the songs on this game are near and dear to my heart and I can honestly say I have ALOT of fun playing this game. The covers are AWESOME and this is the only rythmn game I’ve played where I REALLY feel like I’m making the music and am playing along with the band and not just looking at the stupid dots to know when to hit a note.

Just curious, I’m guessing that you apply the same standard to all sports games too right? If you can’t box, play foot/base/basketball like a pro then you should put down the controller and go learn right? If you can’t skate then NO Tony Hawk for you!

On a side note I have found that knowing how to play the song on an actual guitar hurts you more than helps you. My hand instinctively starts moving around on the neck as though I’m really playing if I don’t pay attention. Knowing what the songs SOUND like on the other hand makes a WORLD of difference.
