Gun Control Working

I didn’t say “lame”, I said “tame”. And I meant it as a compliment. Gun Control threads have been quick to degenerate into screams of “Fanatical gun-owners, ruining the country!” in the past.

And, yes, it is ridiculous to directly relate US and Australian statistics. However, it serves to show that Gun Control isn’t the Holy Grail that some of its proponents make it out to be.

I second that. He’s proven himself to be an unbelievable source of knowledge on certain subjects, and I applaud him for that (now he’s gonna blush…).

Sam,

Do you know there isn’t a higher suicide rate among people who live in high rises? My suspicion is that there probably would be, but for a variety of social reasons rather than simply the ease of committing suicide.

Anyway, I posted a link above which suggests that there is a correlation.

PeeQueue,

I think we agree: it’s the “I see you’re wearing the Clan MacSporran tartan” silliness which is a modern invention, not tartan itself.

Let’s not forget the JAMA study )conducted by gun control proponents) that showed strong evidence that the Brady Law had no effect on gun deaths. (in the spirit of fairness, I have to point out that it showed a slightly higher suicide rate where there was no Brady law.)

See JAMA Vol. 284 No. 5, August 2, 2000.

I am wondering why Dentists and Psychologists are such high risks then. I wonder what their favored method of suicide is, drill? death by couch? Mercury poisoning?

With the many factors leading to suicide, availability of a weapon can only be one component. Suicides by firearm may go down when the availability of guns decreases, but that does not mean that suicides overall decrease. Genetics, mental illness, the economy, one’s profession, etc, have some effect.

Dentists, at least, have access to drugs: painkillers, sedatives and anaesthetics. Don’t know about psychologists.

Agreed.

But there’s evidence that it does (see above).

But of course, one main reason for suicides is depression, resulting sometimes from long term bad weather, which is why the suicide rate in the Pacific Northwest is high, without respect to method.

Therefore, living in Oregon and Washington State ought to be illegal.
