She told us stories about going to school on the wooden sidewalks of the capital city before the Great Patriotic War, when it was -40 in the steppe-like winter, and how earlier, when my grandfather and his family lived in a small town south of there, his family and one other were the only ones in the town who could afford meat, because my grandfather was quartermaster for the army, and the other family was the Mayor’s… It’s gotten better since then. ---
