‘Appendix-in-waistband-carry’ is a perfectly useful way to carry a concealed firearm. This [blog post](https://aliengearholsters.com/blog/guide-to-appendix-carry/) from a holster manufacturer goes into the benefits and drawbacks of that carry method. Basically, it’s easier to move around and it’s easier to ‘present’ the pistol, versus other concealed carry methods. I don’t use it, but I understand why people do. It does have some potentially dangerous aspects to it, as the example of the shot-up idiot should make obvious. The muzzle is pointing near very valuable, highly vascularized parts of the human anatomy. In a proper holster, this won’t be a problem: the trigger will be protected from inadvertent manipulation, and modern pistols do not discharge unless the trigger is manipulated. Unfortunately, many idiots forgo using a holster—Plaxico Burress being one of the more notable—and still more people fail to treat holstering and unholstering with the care and concern the actions require. Wonkette can write what it wants, and find the silly people it needs to prove its point; the firearms owners and users I know, find nothing sympathetic about a negligent discharge or the people it happens to. It’s not heroic at all. They’re frequently objects of laughter and derision: [“I’m the only one in this room professional enough, that I know of, to carry this glock 40”](https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x45vxql), [“I just shot myself!”](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zYvAxLX6OzE). I agree (and I’m pretty sure Wonkette agrees, although I can’t speak for them, obviously) that accidentally shooting oneself or wounding oneself through (as you put it) “negligent discharge” is a bad thing and not to be ridiculed. But guys who intentionally point (in this case, loaded) guns at their genitals do not merit sympathy or defense. That’s not accidental. It’s just stupid. ---
