Seriously? That’s all you got? Wow. I assure you I have read the thread. I started it. Nothing in it shows how registration would lead to less gun crime.
it may take you a while to process. good luck.
Registering legal guns, followed by confiscation of same, should result in a smaller pool of available guns for criminals to steal from people. This could result in fewer criminals using guns; more likely, they wouldn’t see the guns as being as disposable as they are now, so they would use them for more crimes and, if they were eventually caught, would be held responsible for multiple counts and face longer prison terms.
For the record, I am not in favor of confiscating legally-owned guns.
Yup. Not much more needs to be said.
Of course confiscation can’t really happen unless guns are registered. Thanks for your honesty.
Knock it off, both of you .
Good thing I didn’t say hat then, in’t it.
enipla, basically I think part of being a responsible gun owner is to make sure that your responsible guns don’t end up in criminal hands. Registration is part of the process to ensure that. Right now, AFAIK, in pretty much any state of the union, you can give/sell your gun(s) on to pretty much anyone you choose without any kind of background check. Now, you may be a responsible and safe gun owner, but there is even less of an assurance that the person you sell your gun onto is responsible, and the person they sell it onto after that ad nauseum.
If heaven forbid you sell your “legal” gun on to someone that shoots up a school, at this time AFAIK you would have zero criminal or civil liability. Christ, you have clear legal risks for selling booze to a minor but none for selling on your “legal” gun.
I think all guns should be registered, and there should be background checks for all new and used firearms.
And eventually we will get to the point where the only non-registered guns are illegal and the battle lines become much clearer. IMHO I don’t think you can call yourself a “responsible” gun owner if you take the stance “there are so many illegal guns in the US we should do jack squat except allow a free for all.”
I’m not trying to ban all firearms and hell I find it pretty fun to blow off the very occasional box of rounds myself. When I find the time, I’m also going to put my eldest through a safety course so she has a proper respect for firearms.
John Q. Public buys a gun at a federally licensed gun dealer. He goes through the background check, required training, licensing, waiting period, registration, and jumps through any other hoops the anti-gunners have wet dreams about.
Some time later the gun is stolen during a burglary. The burgalar trades the gun on the street for drugs. Eventually the gun is used in a homicide by a gang member. The killer then turns the gun into a “gun buy back” program, gets $50 and the gun is melted down.
Please explain how any of those regulations prevented a gun related crime.
I believe the tech already exists. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen (on tech TV shows) guns that can’t fire unless they’re within range of the proper RFID chip which the owner would keep with him/her (as opposed to storing with the gun).
Here ya go. Certainly some bugs to be worked out, but the technology is pretty straight forward.
You forgot about the gun safes and trigger locks.
Wiki on Smart Gun.
Only the magnetic type has been on the market and only for a very few models.
ETA: the system in your link is years from ready and you still need to make a specific model for each gun.
According to the wiki article on the New Jersey law:
“Weapons used by law enforcement officers would be exempt.”
So why would that be?
I’d guess that they don’t believe this will work very well and they want to make sure police officers can fire their weapons if needed. Or, if one officer goes down, another one can pick up the first officer’s gun and use it. Granted, they could have a “master key” system in place so that any officer can use any gun, but that gets ugly fast.
Most likely, you don’t want the officer’s gun to fail to fire due to a failure of the lockout system to disengage.
The various systems are not yet reliable enough for the market.
Well I wouldn’t want that to happen to my gun either.
Both easy to over come, especially the trigger locks.
Why do people buy them, then? I’m actually curious here, not trying to be sarcastic. My grandpa kept his guns in a locked wooden case with a glass front; the lock was just there so the kids couldn’t get at them, not to stop any kind of burglar.
Nowadays, buying a gun safe, I’d kind of assumed they were all intended to keep your garden-variety burglar from getting away with your guns. Is that not the case?
Couple things. Who are these “gun grabbers”? All I see from the gun control side is restrictions and regulations. Are they lying? Is there a secret conspiracy manipulating them, or are they all in on it? Are they all just pretending to be for more restrictions and background checks, but are really following UN orders? Maybe the Protocols of the Elders of Amish? Not a hippy conspiracy, I would have gotten the memo.
Get over it. its an absurdity, you could no more effectively confiscate all the guns in America than you could confiscate all the freckles. If they tried they would fail, spectacularly, even if there wasn’t the slightest resistance.
But there will be further regulation and restriction, bet on it. Each time this sort of shit happens, we get that much closer to the tipping point. Think its going to stop? Me, I’d love to think so. I don’t.
If the “pro gun” forces rally all their money and political power, I would bet they could stop this gun regulation effort right in its tracks. Or at least slow it down in committe until it dies of old age.
For now. Until it happens again. And again.
So, you want to negotiate now? When folks are motivated, but still reasonable? Or wait till they get howling mad and afraid?
I never knew anyone who bought a trigger lock on purpose. Some guns come with them. I think some states require that. Most of the ones I’ve seen are these cheap plastic things that I can actually break with my fingers. Like this:

I throw those in the trash immediately. The few that appear to be better quality, I keep in case somebody wants one. Nobody has yet.
Your post doesn’t distinguish between SDMB posters and other “anti-gunners,” whoever they are. But I remind you about this rule:
