Eh, not mine. Though strangely every Walmart I’ve ever been in I’ve seen what appeared to be hillbilly meth-heads. I mean, are there hillbilly meth-heads everywhere or what? Or do they travel long distances in some kind of a hillbilly Walmart pilgrimage?
Neither have I, except during the opening of hunting season in PA.
I don’t often enter a Walmart, but I have never seen a gun there.
I know that but I have a chance. Better than being a sitting duck. The kids at the schools and the church goers were. If someone there have a gun they have a chance.
That’s all it is, a chance. That’s the odds I like better.
So here’s a scenario,
Sitting home watching tv, wife says jeez dude run to the 7-11 and buy me a big ole hershey bar.
So you jump in your suv, gun on your hip.
Lots of peeps around, you run in find the Hershey and get in a line of folks buying cigs and beer, lotto tickets. It’s taking freaking forever. You are getting pissed.
All of a sudden a guy in a hoodie runs in brandishing what appears to be a handgun, tells the clerk to hand over the cash. Peeps are scattering, women screaming, babies crying. A teenager turns and runs into you, trying to run away.
Are you saying in the ensuing chaos you can unholster, take aim and actually shoot the bad guy? And why would you? Presumably he will leave when he has cash. No one got hurt no blood, no dead bodies. All that’s gone is money.
Here’s the instructional video/fantasy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mks9E7kdhGY
The whole movie is a good illustration of the mindset.
And the associated murders committed by the armed robber that were prevented by The Good Guy With The Gun[sup]®[/sup]!
I understand what you’re saying. But I think there could be a logical problem with saying, “All guns are always loaded.” If all guns are always loaded, why should I bother checking the chamber after picking up a gun? If all guns are always loaded, why bother unloading them before putting them away? And if your handgun is always loaded, it means you will never be able to check it in at the airline counter at the airport, since FAA regs say it must be unloaded.
For me, a gun is loaded or unloaded. Period. But even though I know a gun is unloaded, I treat it as if it were loaded. Hence the reason I prefer, “Treat all guns as if they’re loaded.”
Wistful thinking. Some robbers shot the clerks after getting the money. I will have my gun out in case. Will I shoot I don’t know, I can’t answer that.
Or turns around and shoots you before you draw a bead. Maybe you could just aim at the gun and it will jump out of his hand and then slamming on the floor ejecting the shell and shooting the pregnant lady between you and him. There’s is no good outcome unless you’re extremely lucky and bad guy goes down, no fuss, no muss. The giant corporation that owns 7-11 will thank you for saving their $147.00, but a guy lost his life.
You gonna have some 'splaining to do when LE shows up. Do you really want that headache? BTW, Sigman I don’t mean you personally, I don’t know your situation.
Hmm… I should’ve said will I have my gun out? I don’t know, I can’t answer that.
A lot of practice make a lot less with luck.
I hear you.
It’s a conundrum.
Unless it is happening to a person he/she can’t know, I guess.
IMO more guns just means more bullets flying around loose.
I don’t want to be anywhere near that kinda situation.
Maybe that is why I am agoraphobic in a large store or out of my comfort zone in a place I don’t know.
The older I get the more wary I am.
I don’t possess a CCW. Nor do I own a gun. I do, however, believe in our right to carry arms, and as such, the best reason for someone to open carry is to demonstrate that right.
Sure, people get nervous, but the more they’re exposed to something, the less nervous they’ll be. It’s kind of like the desensitization to violence on mass media that we’ve experienced for the last 30 years.
Carry a weapon is amongst our enumerated rights. Not being “uncomfortable” is not an enumerated right. When it comes to rights, the burden is not on the person exercising rights, but on the person who feels uncomfortable to become educated.
Maybe this isn’t a perfect parallel, but if you support the natural, human right to engage in sexual relations with the same sex, you’re going to make a lot of people “uncomfortable.” Is anyone really suggesting that homosexuals remain in the closet because it makes others uncomfortable?
Balthisar, as was famously said by a better writer than I, I am all for people getting it on in the way they prefer to, “as long as they do not do it in the middle of the street and frighten the horses”.
Same in this case. I can bear arms w/o making a display of it just to prove I can.
I do not believe being *conspicuously *armed everywhere and anywhere while you carry out mundane activities was ever the norm for most of the US population. Trying to make it so seems ahistorical and trying to retcon a myth. A weapon exists for the purpose of defense, not for the purpose of making a point or “virtue signaling”. If I’m out in bear country OK, sure. Piece in a waistband holster if for some ungodly reason I have to walk through East Baltimore in the wee hours, it may come in handy. But slinging a long gun as I walk the dog around a suburban block in broad daylight or as I shop at the Big Box Store gains me… what? Attention?
ISTM eschereal’s points 2 to 4 are actually more like principles about the use of deadly force itself, and run parallel to the safe weapons handling rules though encompassing Cooper’s #3 (never point at what you do not want to destroy).
If you observe animals in their natural habitat you’ll see them always looking and listening for danger. They don’t want to be killed and eaten.
For us humans, we are in condition (color). That range from white to red.
In condition white, you are relaxed and unaware of what is going on around you. Most people falls in this category.
In condition yellow, you remain relaxed, but are aware of who and what is around you. This means you are paying attention to the sights and sounds that surround you whether you are at home or moving in society.
In condition orange, you have identified something of interest that may or may not prove to be a threat. Until you determine the true nature of whatever has piqued your interest, your “radar” is narrowed to concentrate on the possible threat and will remain so focused until you are satisfied no threat exists.
If the focus of your attention in condition orange does something you find threatening, you will shift to condition red.
Notice here that condition red IS NOT the firing stroke, as some instructors have misconstrued from Cooper’s teachings. Instead, condition red simply changes the focus of your attention from a potential threat to a potential target. You will draw your weapon, or move still further to sight acquisition, only if the potential target’s actions dictate such a response.
Most of the time I’m in condition yellow even at home. I’m relaxed but aware what’s happening around me. Even while I’m driving my car and in stores. I cannot get in condition white if I wanted to.
Are you former military?
Not a whole lot of people support the right to walk around with your dick hanging out or fucking in the middle of a public space.
It is not even the barest beginning of a point. Putting people in fear for their lives in the face of a deadly weapon bears no resemblance at all to allowing your love for another human being to show in public. Every reasonable human being is afraid of assault rifles. They are designed and manufactured for the sole purpose of killing large numbers of people in a short period of time.
It is my right to wander around a restaurant with a bottle of rat poison in my hand. If I don’t intend to use the rat poison to kill anybody, then I haven’t broken any laws. Nonetheless I would fully expect the manager to ask me to leave.
Why would this be a good thing? If we get accustomed to seeing any and everybody carrying guns like it’s no big deal, then won’t we become less likely to be on guard around threatening individuals? Seems like that’s setting people up to be hurt by bad guys. If someone pulls out and raises a gun in public, I want my instincts to kick in. Run and hide. What I don’t want is to be standing there assuming he means no harm.
Look for the “Sporting Goods” sign.
