Guy Clark died today.

I first heard Guy’s music in 1976, my freshman year in college. My brother had a copy of Old No. 1. I was struck.

LA Freeway
Desperados Waiting for a Train
Let Him Roll

not to mention

Texas-1947

I put Texas-1947 last as it was supposed to be biographical. It tells of the first diesel-electric train to pass through Monahans, Texas in 1947. It starts
“Being six years old, I had seen some trains before
So it’s hard to figure out what I’m at the depot for…”

And later
“And it’s late afternoon on a hot Texas day
Something strange is goin’ on and we’re all in the way”

Now, Guy was born in Monahans on November 6, 1941. Even in Monahans, by November, the “hot Texas days” are only in the memories of summer. For Guy to have been six years old on a hot Texas day, it would have had to be 1948 as he didn’t turn 6 until November 1947.

I had the chance to ask Guy about this as I met him backstage at a show years ago. But, I was way too awestruck to just say something coherent, I didn’t feel like testing his math. He was a poet and songwriter, not a math major.

I’m Heartbroke.
