How often does a lap dance end in a marriage proposal from the stripper? I do not often go to “gentleman’s clubs” but several weeks ago a buddy and I were bored one weekend night and went to a local one. (He denied going there a lot, but _everyone_ seemed to know him by name… but that’s a different story.) Anyway, I let this one woman, who I did find kind of cute, talk me into a lap dance. I had a little difficulty understanding her since the music was loud and, being Thai, she had an accent. Towards the end of the dance she said something about “married”. Assuming she had asked if I was married, I responded “no”. She looked at me and rather plaintively said “maybe”? I, still not exactly sure what was going on, more or less automatically responded “maybe”. After a little more conversation I realized what she was asking. After the dance I went back to the bar to sit next to my buddy. She sat next to me and pretty much wrapped herself around me. I was making jokes to my buddy about her proposing to me while she kept talking about it and appearing to get more and more exasperated at my making light of it. At first I thought she was just making a joke that she didn’t think I’d take seriously, but eventually it was clear that she was serious. Don’t get me wrong - I don’t mean _serious_ serious. I mean it in the sense that she expected me to believe that she was serious rather than just being sassy and flirty. She hung by me most of the rest of the time I was there except to dance on stage and once or twice make her circuit around the bar getting dollar bills from the other guys, and she always apologetically said she had to go make some money before doing so. I understand that they flirt with you and try to make you feel special, but this was kind of over the top. She was attractive and could have been making money hustling couch dances but instead sat there wrapped around me. Now, I don’t for one moment believe that she had any serious interest in me other than financial, but I’ve never heard of strippers immediately proposing marriage to first time customers. Sure, they try to make you feel special and make you think that maybe they could be your girlfriend, but an immediate marriage proposal? Is this a common thing, is it some sort of con (beyond trying to get me to buy dances)? Was she weird or high or something? ---

I’d think it would be counter-productive - the last thing your average strip club patron is looking for is a commitment. Maybe it’s a common line back in Thailand. Some of the lines I’ve gotten: “I’m a party girl and I can tell you guys are partyers so I’m hanging out with you.” “I’m really a college student. I’m just working here until I graduate.” “Can I hang out with you guys for awhile? There’s some real creeps here tonight and I’d rather avoid them.” ---

She said she comes here because she doesn’t want people there to know what she does. She said that she has difficulty reading and writing English. If true, I suppose maybe she can’t find any other decent source of income. I have to say that the story about her life really did sound sincere. She even told me that she was going back home in a couple of days and made sure that I knew the date that she’d be back here. It wouldn’t make a lot of sense business-wise to make up a story like that. If she danced all the time you’d think she’d want me to come every weekend to spend money. ---

I would say StickyPants is more or less accurate although the rules in NYC clubs are slightly different (topless instead of all-nude for example). My “qualification” are just having a lot of friends and coworkers who are lawyers, consultants, investment bankers and whatnot who have some disposable income and a penchant for the nudie bars. ---

I doubt you’d see this kind of “intensity” at a typical topless/pasties Gentlemen’s Club, but at the sleazier establishments that don’t have liquor licenses to worry about it’s much more common.
