And, more on topic: I bear GHWB no ill will, and nothing I’ve heard of him since his presidency has made me think any less of him. I think it’s kind of neat how close he and Bill Clinton became to each other.

You sometimes get the feeling that George the elder has found in Bill the intelligent, competent son he always wished he’d had…

So far as George HW goes, I’m with everyone else; in retrospect especially he was a competent, able President who made some good, hard decisions. (Imagine a Republican going back on THE GROVER NORQUIST PLEDGE to never raise taxes today!) He also seems to be a good and decent human being; see him shaving his head for the kid w/ leukemia (IIRC). (Note that I think GWB is probably a good and decent human being, if perhaps not up to his dad’s level yet. Unfortunately, he was a mighty shitty President.)
