So what are the hackers doing with the information? Has anyone seen any suspicious activity, log ons, password resets on their accounts?
Damn you for exposing the secret. It’s the “.” that throws them off. You take a simple password and add a random special character at the end. 
It’s no coincidence. I did too. Saturday morning someone changed my walmart.com email address and password but fortunately WM sends out emailed notification to the old email. I called WM support and actually got an English speaking guy. Turns out the crooks ordered a bunch of TVs and tablets. Walmart immediately identified it as fraud so kudos to them.
The guy asked me how the hackers could have changed my registered email address without knowing my password. I told him it was easy for them to do because I had been an idiot.
AaronX, as others have mentioned, there is not much to gain from obtaining your username and password on the SDMB itself. They can log into your account perhaps, and post silly little messages 
The real danger comes from the fact that everybody uses the same username/password combination on their accounts (think gmail/ebay/paypal). I am guily of this as well, although I do rotate between a number of passwords.
So not only should you change your password here, you should update your passwords on other websites as well, if only to make sure they’re all unique in some way.
This is sort of the reason why I advocate switching forum providers. vBulletin is an aging platform, and it’s clear that the forum developers didn’t do much to maintain security (despite the license to use vBulletin being hundreds of dollars!). The kicker is that forum migration is a pain in the behind.

That’s a good trick considering the vast majority of sites now require a combination of numerals and letters, at least.
I like the idea of mnemonics having to do with life events recorded nowhere but in the mind, such as date and location of meeting spouse or something similar. Thanx
Or you could be sly and use pa$$w0rD. 
it’s got a numbers, a symbol and both upper and lower case letters. It’s also 8 characters long and would show up as a very strong password. :eek:

This is (at least) the second time the Board has been hacked.
Just before I joined, in February 2000, everyone had to change the passwords as a result of a hack. Anyone remember that?
Do you need my social security number? I’d like to close this deal fast before you fall victim to some of our greedier members.
There was also the Winter of Our Missed Content in 2002. Seems like that was the result of a hack.
Perhaps it would be best to have Marley23 just ban us all again and start from scratch.
That was a hack? I don’t really doubt you, but is there a thread or post from TPTB that goes into any detail about it?
