I was imagining something more like what Les Dawson’s Cosmo Smallpiece wears, but that would be wandering way off topic.
I have been in the eyeglass industry for >40 years. In the 80’s medicare was paying ophthalmologists $2k per eye to perform cataract surgery… Soon enough that was reduced to where they now (2023) pay the Dr $600 per eye. What to do? The intraocular lens companies came up with optional implants that cost $2K to $4k per eye AFTER INSURANCE . Ta DA!
It doesn’t work for presbyopia so well… because LASIK is burning the cornea and not making your focusing muscles work on your lens better !. Presbyopia is the lens becoming too firm and the muscles can’t shape it the same as they used to… they can’t bring the lens to a short focal point.
cataracts are in the lens and so cataract surgery changes the lens… allowing it to be softened.
excavating_for_a_mind I refuse to wear glasses, but noticed over the last 2 years it’s harder to read tiny 2-point font of ingredients on a box while in the supermarket; I figured a cheat would be keeping a pocket magnifying square with a light, in my wallet - it works. It goes 3x which is fine, I simply hold the plastic frame while putting the glass on the box where the small print is. But while I was googling for this, I saw there are page-sized magnifying sheets that also go up to 3x - simply lay it on the page. I didn’t get that cause I watch TV sitcoms til I get sleepy, but you could try that, a plastic or glass sheet on a page instead of wearing the glasses on your face.
Is the ‘x’ # scaled to diopters, so the wallet-size one I got or page-sized sheet at 3x magnification = +3.0 for reading glasses?

My cheat is to use the camera on my phone to view small text, and then use the zoom feature. You can even take a picture of it so it is more stable for you to read.
I have been with out with quite a few people that could not read the menu at a restaurant and they had not even considered this option. It’s either too simple of a solution or they don’t feel confident enough with their newfangled phones to consider this.
Oh, and welcome to the board.
This is also a great way to “read” text that is inaccessible to direct line of site (like behind a heavy piece of furniture) or is black on black text (don’t you just love it when the make and model is just embossed text on a black case?)
