Someone posted here about working in a hospital with an old man who had gangrene in his groin - I remember being pretty squicked out by that. Anyone else recall?

As for ghoulish, I’m still partial to those medical patients who are paralized by anesthesia but can still feel everything that happens to them in surgery. _fears_

On a site I visited, they had a story about a man that had necrotic bacteria eat away his sack and leave the testicals on him. I don’t know if he got to keep them or not when they did skin grafts. Think of the man looking down on this little white coiled cluster of what he had left.

Do not do this unless you are serious about viewing squicky Photoshopped images.

From real life:

I was once witness to a draining of necrotic fluid from a dog’s infected leg. The entire leg was swollen, the skin was all stretched taut until it was the shape of one of those fat plastic wiffle bats. It was like a big cartoony balloon leg, full of pus. It was like a giant abscess with a bone down the middle.

Vet techs were draining the fluid, and when they put a syringe into the leg to drain it, olive-green pus fountained 3+ feet in a stream like a squirt gun and spattered on the floor. It smelled deeply deeply horrible. Pungently foul.

From my imagination:

A sultry, sticky late August afternoon, one of those days that are all about heat shimmers boiling in the air and the endless drone of cicadas. Under a fierce blue sky, three nude figures writhe and intertwine, greased with musky sweat, gasping and grunting as they bring one another to greater heights of passion. Gene Shalit, a gentle lover, uses his tongue to languorously caress every rugose fold of Walter Matthau’s wattled, leathery skin. Wilford Brimley, his bristled lips moistly suckling Gene Shalit’s toes, hunkers with his florid hairy corpulence balanced astride Matthau’s face as he manually pleases Shalit and Matthau.

How’s that?

My Dad works in construction and he’s seen a few…things…over the years.

The one that got me was the guy who was run over by a steam roller. Not sure how it happened, maybe the driver was backing up. I don’t think he ran over him completely, I think he stopped midway through and then reversed direction. My Dad, as Superintendent, looked under the machine to see if he could help the guy. The man was trying to move, pick himself up, and couldn’t. The light went out in his eyes.

I’d give Picunurse the honors so far for real photos.

Extra credit to everyone whose Halloween imagination is working overtime!

Just to clear things up: The “adipocere” image was not my own. Why is this? Because I never never NEVER post images from my autopsies. Never have and never will. I’m not one of those ghouls like the assholes who went after Dale Earnhardt’s autopsy photos. Those things are private.

I just google-imaged “adipocere” and took the first picture that wasn’t of some Goth band. I agree, she doesn’t look too adipocere-y, except her ear. Unless her chest is. But I doubt it because her lines look so clean and normal. The adipocere I see is usually thick and bloated and has little pores where water has escaped it. It retains some of the features of normal flesh, but often bloats out way beyond their lines. I suppose it forms after some decomposition has begun.

And it has that unique smell, too.

happy halloween
from my world

I’ve told this one before, and I heard it from the person involved.
Fake names only.

I worked with a young woman named Lynn. She came back to work after a short holiday. Her friends are in the age group of adults 18 to 21. They went to the swimming beach for a day of fun. Some were sunning on the beach and others swimming in the water on a hot July day. A bit of horse play was of course going on as it always does in this age group. One of the young men on the pier yelled for everybody to watch this. He dived off the pier and came back up after a moment. He was floating in the water. Lynn was the first to get to him and the water was red around him. This was of course for a very good reason. Somebody went to call an ambulance about this time. She held his face up in the water to keep him from drowning, and he was dazed but conscious. She had to hold him for about twenty minutes like that until an ambulance arrived to treat him and take him to the hospital. Let me elaborate on the situation. She was holding the man tilted back with his head close to her in almost chest high water. The man was floating with her help with his back to the lake bottom. No body relieved her this whole time. Let’s get on with the events. The man was talking to her but was not aware of exactly what happened, only that something happened. He was asking her if it was bad. What exactly was it? He knew that when he dived he hit his head on a rock or something at least. He couldn’t tell exactly what the damage had been. The lady just told him he had a bad cut. That was a lie of kindness. He had sliced open the skin to the skull around the hair line. The forward momentum had peeled back his face skin half way down until about even with the nose. It looked about like when a plastic surgeon peels back the face to reconstruct the face. She spent twenty minutes holding this guy face up while he asked how bad it really was. She got a bit shaky at times, but stayed on her feet until the ambulance people came out to move him. Horror is twenty minutes very close to the peeled back flapping skin and exposed muscles of a friends face.

From a response to Cecil’s column on “Do decapitated heads remain conscious?”

> [@](#):
>
> My friend’s head came to rest face up, and (from my angle) upside-down. As I watched, his mouth opened and closed no less than two times. The facial expressions he displayed were first of shock or confusion, followed by terror or grief. I cannot exaggerate and say that he was looking all around, but he did display ocular movement in that his eyes moved from me, to his body, and back to me. He had direct eye contact with me when his eyes took on a hazy, absent expression . . . and he was dead.

This scene squicks me out no end.

I’ve cared for three (maybe four, I’m old, remember) people with similar injuries. All did very well, and looked normal after repair. One, who had a full face avulsion with a full beard, didn’t lose his facial hair.
The secret to a good outcome is leeches. The leeches produce a mild, local anticoagulant that keeps clots from forming between the skin and fascia.

I have another…
My friend’s husband was chronicly depressed. One day, he called her and his sister into the bedroom. When the were both inside the room, he said “I’ll show you bitches,” put a gun under his chin, and shot his face off.
It took his lower jaw, tongue, nose and sinus cavities. The bullet exited right at the bridge of his nose, sparing his eyes. His brain was untouched.
I saw him every few weeks for the next 5 years at the medical center where I worked while he underwent reconstruction. At one point, he had three pedicle grafts from his chest, one to each cheek and one to his reconstructed chin. He looked like someone from Star Trek. He scared children and adults alike.
BTW, my friend started divorce proceedings the day after the incident. (I think she rocks.)
