# Halloween wedding: what should bride & groom dress as?

We got engaged this weekend. Huzzah!
We are seriously considering having a Halloween wedding. All the guests would have to come in costume, we’d have Darth Vader officiate, and we’d go all-out on costumes ourselves.
The biggest stumbling block is that we don’t know what our costumes could possibly be given the following constraints:
The future Mrs. Seltzer really wants to dress up in a costume, but she’s torn – she also really wants to wear a traditional bridal gown and be a beautiful bride. But all the good costumes are too funny to be beautiful, or not bride-y enough. Her first idea (before we even met, she wanted a Halloween wedding) was an angel. But we’re doing a non-denominational wedding, so angel is probably off the list. “Corpse bride” is out because she doesn’t want the makeup. I suggested the “Pretty in Pink” prom dress, but that got shot down pretty quickly.
She also wants me to be handsome and dashing. But the really handsome costumes aren’t really costumes. James Bond? Not really an identifiable costume. Superman would be iconic and awesome, but also not really that handsome/dashing. Of course, nothing beats an astronaut, but I don’t want to get married with my head obscured.
The costumes don’t have to match. We don’t want any costumes that make weird statements.

Well first thing that popped to mind was Jack Skellington and Sally. I’m sure she could like…make a wedding dress in the patchwork style of Sally’s dress.

If she wants the combo costume and pretty/dressy, the obvious solution is either a Sleeping Beauty/Prince Charming thing or a more generic princess/prince or knight/lady style.
My wife and I got married on Halloween 2010, and when we were discussing doing a costume thing, we were thinking Shrek and Fiona…but that doesn’t lead well to the looking pretty idea.

Matching costumes are cool, but I want to emphasize: the costumes do not need to match. In fact, it might be better if they don’t: more flexibility.

Well, if Darth Vader’s officiating, the obvious choices are Princess Leia (gorgeous white gown from Star Wars) and your choice of either Han Solo or Luke, depending on the vibe, for the groom.

If it doesn’t have to match, then I would say a Disney princess. Perhaps one with a more elaborate dress, such as Belle? I much prefer Sleeping Beauty’s dress though.

I suggest pirates. You could either go the full Jack Sparrow route, or a more formal look with an admiral’s coat replacing Jack’s frock coat. A period gown would probably work for the bride.

Have your bride dressed in whatever gown she loves best. You dress Fancy-Medieval bridegroom-style, with a huge key at your belt. Place an ornate and conspicuously _locked_ door somewhere in the reception hall.

Oooo, of all the suggestions so far, this one would be my choice!
My favorite dress that Vivien Leigh wore in that movie is not the green velvet curtain dress, but the outfit she was wearing on her honeymoon, when she and Rhett were discussing what to bring Mammy as a gift.
