Hamas attacks Israel, October 2023

Probably paywalled, but the WSJ claims that Iran actively helped coordinate these attacks. And quotes

DUBAI—Iranian security officials helped plan Hamas’s Saturday surprise attack on Israel and gave the green light for the assault at a meeting in Beirut last Monday, according to senior members of Hamas and Hezbollah

The US says “not that we know of”

In an interview with CNN that aired Sunday, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said: “We have not yet seen evidence that Iran directed or was behind this particular attack, but there is certainly a long relationship.”

And if true, this is a big deal

A direct Iranian role would take Tehran’s long-running conflict with Israel out of the shadows, raising the risk of broader conflict in the Middle East. Senior Israeli security officials have pledged to strike at Iran’s leadership if Tehran is found responsible for killing Israelis.

Looks like that guy wasn’t actually authorized to speak for the EU, per the Guardian:

As hours elapsed with no explanation, another commissioner was forced to reassure critics that civilians in Gaza were not being abandoned in the face of a “total blockade” of energy and food by Israel.

The commissioner for crisis management, Janez Lenarčič, tweeted:

EU humanitarian aid to Palestinians in need will continue as long as needed.

CNN is saying the death toll is near 900.

To be clear, this is at least 900 killed in Israel (mostly civilians) by the Hamas terrorists.

Apparently Hamas has also been taking hostages. Lots of them.

No situation is ever so terrible that Elon Musk can’t make it worse. (From the Guardian, edited for length).

X’s handling of the Israel-Hamas conflict has come under scrutiny after a “deluge” of fake posts and Elon Musk’s recommendation of war coverage from accounts that have made false claims or antisemitic comments.

One in five social media accounts participating in online conversations about the Hamas attacks and their aftermath are fake, according to Cyabra, an Israeli analysis firm.

I remember the Arab Spring where Twitter (now X) was their lifeline to each other.

So much worse since Musk, who claimed all he really wanted was truly free speech, took over and made it so, so much worse.

Hamas now ready to discuss a ceasefire. Yeah, good luck with that.

Hamas is open to discussions over a possible truce with Israel, having “achieved its targets”, a senior Hamas official has said.

Moussa Abu Marzouk, speaking in a phone interview with Al Jazeera, was asked whether the group is willing to discuss a possible ceasefire.

He replied that Hamas was open to “something of that sort” and to “all political dialogues”.

He added Hamas had captured “tens” of dual citizens from Israel, including those with Russian and Chinese citizenship.

Do people who leave the IDF and are available to be called up have weapons at home? I may be thinking of another country. I wonder how many people who were attacked by hamas had weapons at home.

Sweden has that policy, I think.

Thanks, that is the country I was thinking of.

Switzerland, not Sweden. And since 2007, just the gun, not the ammo.

I read if an Israeli person has a lisc. they can have one gun and 50 bullets.

Thanks, I stand corrected.

Moderating:

The gun laws of Israel aren’t breaking news. If you think they are relevant to the current situation, please take it to the discussion thread, or some other thread as seems appropriate.

That’s a pretty strong statement of support.

Cool.
