Hamas attacks Israel, October 2023

As one news article mentioned, Hamas wouldn’t have launched an attack of this sort without anticipating that there would be a total Israeli ground offensive into Gaza in the weeks that would follow, and also extreme-prepping the entire Gaza region to Stalingrad it.

I expect a much bigger version of the Battle of Fallujah in the coming weeks; bloodily door-by-door.

Syrian state TV says that Israel has hit Syrian airports. No more info that I can find yet.

ETA: if true, the motivation for this would be (I think) to interfere with Iranian logistical support of Hezbollah.

According to one source, the Iranian Foreign Minister’s plane was already on its way to Syria and was forced to turn back due to the attacks.

Diplomacy is a thankless task. It’s going to be inconvenient for him to have to deboard back home with his several thousand items of checked baggage.

It most certainly is worth someone getting banned over, but that someone is not you.

I don’t know if this is paywalled, but it includes video of the attack on the concert. It’s been edited so you don’t actually see a lot of gore. The commentary says what happened when, presumably using timestamps from the video

Also, the concert had security armed with handguns, clearly seen in the video trying to protect concert goers, but they were presumably overwhelmed.

The article is paywalled, but the video is accessible.

In a response to such horrific atrocities and with the stakes so high, it’s more important than ever to be precise with language.

Different person this time. Apparently the kibbutz has volunteer security and a small armory.

I was surprised at the size of the attack. I initially thought maybe 3 or 4 terrorists were assigned to attack a specific kibbutz with military weapons. But this article states a large force attacked and retreated. Then returned to try again. It was a 3 to 5 hour fire fight!

The scale of these attacks against a neighborhood with kids is terrifying.

From that story above:

Israel’s military on Friday called for all civilians of Gaza City, more than 1 million people, to relocate south within 24 hours, as it amassed tanks ahead of an expected ground invasion after a devastating attack by the militant group Hamas.

“Now is a time for war,” Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said on Thursday as Israeli warplanes continued pounding Gaza in retaliation for the weekend attacks by Hamas militants that killed more than 1,300 Israelis, mostly civilians.

I guess technically that’s giving notice. A million people in 24 hours. I understand Israel’s need to destroy Hamas, but I’m also seeing why Biden csutioned them follow the rules.

And Hamas has instructed Gazan citizens not to evacuate.

Crazy. The guy next to you has a gun to your head saying “Don’t move”, and the guy across the border with the tanks is saying “Move, or else!”

Yeah, no shit. I wonder if there is any ‘Underground/resistance’ in Gazza that is trying to take Hamas out.

Yeah. Sucks to be you.

Holy shit, the Palestinians have been dealt a horrible hand, and now this.

I imagine a lot would prefer to die as martyrs, so Israel gets enough bad press to kill its international support. But i imagine a lot would prefer to get the hell out, too.

I doubt it. Hamas has the guns. The Palestinians truly are pawns and are the world’s forsaken people.

Also, isn’t the median age in Gaza something like 18? A lot literally have no choice, as they are children.

What I was about to say. Half of Gaza residents are younger than 19. It’s unconscionable to put children in this position.

Yeah. I think that too. Hogans Hero’s was not a documentary.

Pawn is sometimes used wrong though. I have often won chess games because of pawns. Or a single pawn.

Pawns are also often sacrificed for a win. Which seems to be the case in this mess.
