Hamas attacks Israel, October 2023

That is pretty much Standard Operating Procedure. Carrier Groups get into position to assist if needed. Looks like it is our newest carrier. The USS Gerald R. Ford. CVN-78.

Wow. That’s amazing the amount of them coming in.

Remember, not confirmed though. I don’t think we’ll know until later in the week. Thus I didn’t bother linking.

Gotcha. And thanks for the info. As we know it.

Also, not everyone who has been killed in Israel was killed by missile strikes. There was a surge across the border from Gaza that has included killing soldiers, breaking into people’s homes ad shelters and killing them, and killing people fleeing from a big music festival. When I look at Facebook, I see a large number of young people who were at the music event whose families still have not been able to find them.

Yeah, the missiles are not responsible for the bulk of the casualties. They can only target a general area, Iron Dome shoots down most of those headed directly for towns, and Israelis are well drilled at running to bomb shelters.

It’s the roving bands of raping and murdering Hamas terrorists that caused most of the damage.

I’d expect the stance of the U.S. would be to ensure that Iran or any other antagonistic external power don’t act up.

But when reports are that some of the hostages are U.S. citizens that does change the calculus significantly.

Over 600 dead and dozens taken hostage. I’m seeing about 300 attributed to the missiles.

Would the paragliders have flown in under the ‘radar’ as it were?

I wonder where they got them.

I don’t know how to link to it since I’m watching the live broadcast, but the BBC’s coverage (which is outstanding btw), just showed about 15 missiles launching from within Gaza and their subsequent destruction by Iron Dome. It’s really impressive.

If you meant the Iron Dome, it isn’t looking for gliders so it wouldn’t detect them.

I suspect that this is related to the question of “How was Israel able to miss this?”

The Irish battled the British for centuries and the IRA was largely an ineffective, self-destructive organization for most time that would commit some small, petty crime that brought the British down on that operational group with no larger impact.

And then Michael Collins got into position and everything changed. (Part of that change was in a more effective effort on directly targeting and hurting the British security apparatus. I’m not comparing this attack by Hamas to the Irish terrorism efforts, morally.)

Collins found and/or developed information sources on the British side, was good at managing operational security, and was just generally more effective at organization than most radicals.

In the case of Hamas, I’d guess that some more effective than usual leader has arisen, that they have confidence in their ability to avoid the Israelis, and they have had the Israeli anti-settlement leftists (who, I’m sure, didn’t expect any results like this - I’m not condoning them, nor even stating that they do factually exist, just giving a “possibly most likely” chain of events) in the military and intelligence operations supplying information and blocking discoveries of Hamas activities. Some of that may be with the aid of Iran but I think it’s unlikely that they’d commit organizational suicide on the command of Iran. Probably there’s someone in Hamas who is a more effective leader.

The anti-settlement Israelis (like myself) would never work with Hamas. That’s a ridiculous accusation. Especially since Gaza isn’t where the settlements are - they’re in the West Bank, where Hamas is not.

Observing what has been going on in Ukraine and Russia over the last year and a half has to have been both instructive and inspiring for Hamas fighters and their planners. If Ukraine can strike deep inside the territory of their larger and much more powerful adversary; why can’t Hamas? The impossible now seems possible. That’s a great leap forward for any military group.

Likewise, US military wouldn’t share state secrets on Discord, nor share the NSAs hacking tools with Russia.

There are always crazies and radicals hiding in any organization. That’s only going to increase when you have a conscription military.

Found one! This isn’t the one I was watching that was taken from inside Gaza, but it’s similar:

Discourse won’t let me embed the video directly for some reason. Hopefully this works…

It’s a great video, but it’s currently several pages down on BBC’s rapidly growing updates site. Here’s a more accessible one from CNN:

ETA: The above simul-posted with @Zakalwe just above. The YouTube video seems like a more expanded version of the CNN link above. Here’s the YouTube video directly

Anti missile batteries that track and destroy incoming rockets. It can tell if a rocket is going to land harmlessly in the boonies and not fire at it.

How did you get the preview to show for YouTube. I was told I couldn’t embed media until I “broke” it by adding the “Link:” text.

Here’s the video I was originally talking about, finally found it:
