Handgun ban...how would you do it?

For me personally, its a combination of the two. An immediate ban, but supported by the majority. Someone in another topic once proposed that the most likely way the American public would accept a serious ban on guns is if there was a widespread coup attempt against the US government that lead to a government crackdown. I sort of base my hypotheticals on that, though not specifically. In mine, the US public, in general, accepts a handgun ban that happens immediately

That is the very REASON for the existence of the second amendment - to take down a government that is not governing according to the will of the people. In a case like that, the people most certainly will NOT peacefully give up their guns. The very act of “cracking down” on guns in that way would cause another, larger, revolt.

In the event of a coup-driven crackdown, I would expect not only widespread noncompliance with bans, I would expect mutinies within the armed services and from police. A coup is one of the few things I can see actually driving this nation into a civil war.

No, the reason is to change a corrupt government. An illegitimate coup of fanatics is actually one of the only GOOD reasons why I feel people would follow a handgun ban. They’ll see a bunch of nuts trying to shoot their way into power, realize that guns have become inevitably connected with such extremists, and realize that the government is doing more to protect them that harm them.

It’s not as simple as banning handguns, all that would do is “attempt” to keep people from legally owning handguns. The good guys are one ones who would be totally FUKKED. If you want to ban handguns make sure handguns are not being manufactured anymore. As long as they’re manufactured there’s no way to ban them they’re gonna get into the wrong hands. It’s that simple.

There you have it. Ban the sale and large-scale manufacture of new handguns. Buy, sell, and trade all the used handguns you want. And destroy any that are impounded after being used in a crime. Eventually handguns will end up in the hands (natch) of legal firearm owners, who won’t be hassled. It might take years or decades, but so what?

As 3D printing improves, the possibility of preventing new manufacture drops dramatically.As it stands, a guy with hobbyist-level machine tools can make a gun right now.

That’s fine, but if it’s used in the committing of a crime, it’s slag.
