On Bastille day 1983, I was 13 years old and spending the summer living with a French family. I got my first real kiss on the beach at Soulac-sur-Mer from a boy named Stephane. It was awesome, even though he had to stand on the wooden walkway because I was already 5’10" at that age.

Later that night I got hit in the eye with a bottle rocket. Less awesome. Still, it’s a nice memory.
