John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (January 3, 1892 – September 2, 1973), author of _The Hobbit_ and _The Lord Of The Rings_ was born this day, and I can honestly state that I do not know anybody whose life wasn’t made a little happier for it. 🙂 [THIS THREAD](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=352162) celebrates, with jokes & recollections, the birth of Issac Asimov.
