Greetings from the past! We’re next. It’s almost 11:30pm. We’re going to go up on our roof – we live in a 36-story building in central Bangkok – to watch the fireworks when it gets close to midnight. Bangkok always has good displays in all directions. The poor pigeons living on our balcony are being spooked by all the fireworks going off downstairs. They may be in for a long night. EDIT: Almost forgot to mention. Bangkok will have the [world’s tallest New Year’s Eve ball drop](http://abcnews.go.com/Lifestyle/thailand-host-worlds-tallest-years-eve-ball-drop/story?id=21369036), 15 meters. ---

We’re out in the sticks and it sounds like a war zone. I can’t imagine what Taipei would be like! It’s so funny that you are still in 2013. It seems so long ago. Like what, 30 minutes? ---

And it’s done. Quite nice fireworks, but like the New Year’s decorations around town, it seemed a little subdued from past years. And it was only 13 years ago when the wife and I, for our first act of the millennium, fled for our lived on the beach in Hua Hin, on our Upper Peninsula. A fancy hotel on the beach promised a big fireworks show to usher in the millennium. It was big all right, and we found ourselves inadvertently right on top of it. Happy New Year! ---

The fireworks display in Dubai at midnight [set a new all-time record for a fireworks display](http://www.businessinsider.com/dubai-record-fireworks-new-years-2013-12) – more than 500,000 fireworks that took six minutes to complete. The previous record was a mere 77,000 fireworks launched to celebrate Kuwait’s Golden Jubilee in 2012. ---

And just to note, the new year in Thailand is 2557. There is a Thai-ism that people throw around over here this time of year that I quite enjoy. Although there is a Thai-language version of “Happy New Year,” Thais often say “Happy New Year” in English. But they pronounce “Year” more like “Yia.” Which is awfully close to the Thai word _mia_ (wife). So jokesters will often say “Happy New Mia” (Happy New Wife). This passes for high humor in Thailand. 😃 ---
